October 6, 2019 - 27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Heb 1: 2 – 3; 2: 2 – 4 / 2 Tm 1: 6 – 8, 13 – 14 / Lk 17: 5 – 10

FROM THE 1ST READING: Heb 1: 2 – 3
In our times he has spoken definitively to us through his Son. He is the one God appointed heir of all things, since through him he unfolded the stages of the world. He is the radiance of God's Glory and bears the stamp of God's hidden being, so that his powerful word upholds the universe. And after taking away sin, he took his place at the right hand of the divine Majesty in heaven.

From the 2nd Reading: 2 Tm 1: 6 – 8
For this reason I invite you to fan into a flame the gift of God you received through the laying on of my hands. For God did not confer on us a spirit of bashfulness, but of strength, love and good judgment. Do not be ashamed of testifying to our Lord, nor of seeing me in chains. On the contrary, do your share in laboring for the Gospel with the strength of God.

GOSPEL READING: Lk 17: 5 – 10
The apostles said to Jesus, "Increase our faith." And the Lord said, "If you have faith even the size of a mustard seed, you may say to this tree: 'Be uprooted and plant yourself in the sea,' and it will obey you.

"Who among you would say to your servant coming in from the fields after plowing or tending sheep: 'Come at once and sit down at table'? No, you tell him: 'Prepare my dinner. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink; you can eat and drink afterwards.' Do you thank your servant for doing what you commanded? So for you. When you have done all that you have been told to do, you must say: 'We are no more than servants; we have only done our duty.'"

In the Gospel reading our Lord Jesus instructs and assures his disciples of the power of real faith: "If you have faith even the size of a mustard seed, you may say to this tree: 'Be uprooted and plant yourself in the sea,' and it will obey you."

Our Lord performed many of his miracles as a response and recognition of the faith of the people concerned: he cured from afar the sick servant of the centurion, "I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith." (Lk 7: 9)

Jesus expelled the evil spirit from the daughter of the Syro-phoenician woman who declared, "Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the crumbs from the children's table." "You may go your way: because of such a reply the demon has gone out of your daughter." (Mk 7:28 -29)

The woman suffering from bleeding for many years was cured when she touched the fringe of Jesus' cloak, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace." (Lk 8: 47 – 48)

He forgave sins because of the faith of the people and their obvious repentance. In curing the paralyzed man in Capernaum, Jesus also forgave his sins: "When Jesus saw the faith of the people, he said to the paralytic, 'My son, your sins are forgiven." (Mk 2: 5)

Jesus forgave the woman known as a public sinner who washed his feet at dinner at Simon's house, "This is why, I tell you, her sins, her many sins, are forgiven, because of her great love. . . Your sins are forgiven Your faith
has saved you." (Lk 7: 47 – 50)

In the first and second reading we are told about the object of our faith, the Son who became man like us to save us, the same Lord whom Paul preached, labored and endured many trials and sufferings in witness of.

"Lord, increase our faith," we also pray.

FINALLY, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
