Saturday, 25th Week in Ordinary Time

24 September 2016
Saturday, 25th Week in Ordinary Time
Green.

Eccl 11:9 – 12: 8 / Lk 9: 43b – 45.

From the 1st Reading: Eccl 11: 9 - 10
Rejoice, young man, in your youth and direct well your heart when you are young;  follow your desires and achieve your ambitions but recall that God will take account of all that you do.  Drive sorrow from your heart and pain from your flesh, for youth and dark hair will not last.  Be mindful of your Creator when you are young, before the time of sorrow when you have to say, "This gives me no pleasure."

Gospel Reading: Lk 43b - 45
And all who saw it were astonished at God's wonderful work.  While all were amazed at everything Jesus did, he said to his disciples, "Listen and remember what I tell you now: The Son of Man will be delivered into human hands." But the disciples didn't understand this saying; something prevented them from grasping what he meant, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Reflection:
Prior to today's Gospel incident, we see Jesus expelling an evil spirit from a possessed child.  The possessed child was brought to Jesus because the disciples were unable to cure him.  Jesus rebukes the disciples and people for their lack of faith, "You faithless people! How wrong you arre! How long must I be with you and put up with you?" (Lk9: 41)

After the cure of the epileptic child, Jesus foretells that "the Son of Man will be delivered into human hands."  "But the disciples didn't understand this saying; something prevented them from grasping what he meant, and they were afraid to ask him."

In the Gospel of Mark, Peter had an even stronger reaction when Jesus predicted his suffering and death: "Peter took him aside and began to protest strongly."  And Jesus rebuked him harshly, "Get behind me Satan! You are thinking, not as God does, but as people do"  (Mk 8: 32 – 33)

The disciples could not cure the possessed child because they lacked faith. They could not understand Jesus' speaking of his suffering and death because they were thinking, "not as God does, but as people do."

the wisdom to appreciate God's ways rather than men's and to live accordingly.

Today's Gospel reading asks us:  Are we living by faith?  Are we relying on the power of God every day?  Or are we working very hard to deal with our day-to-day challenges using only our own power?

Friday, 25th Week in Ordinary Time

23 September 2016

Friday, 25th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, Priest

Memorial.         White.

Eccl 3:1 – 11 / Lk 9:18 – 22

Born in the Italian village of Pietrelcina, St. Padre Pio (1887 – 1968) was a Capuchin priest famed for his miraculous abilities as a confessor, spiritual adviser and intercessor.

Gospel Reading: Lk 9:18 - 22

One day when Jesus was praying alone, not far from his disciples, he asked them, "What do people say about me?" And they answered, "Some say that you are John the Baptist; others say that you are Elijah, and still others that you are one of the former prophets risen from the dead." Again Jesus asked them, "Who then do you say I am?" Peter answered, "The Messiah of God." Then Jesus spoke to them, giving them strict orders not to tell this to anyone.

And he added, "The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life."

Reflection

The Gospel reading presents a key event in the public ministry of Jesus. After a couple of years with his disciples, years of teaching by word and by his miracles and actions, he asks them what people say of him and what they say he is.

This disciples say that others think he was John the Baptist or Elijah or one of the prophets risen from the dead. When asked who they themselves say Jesus was, Peter makes the confession, in the name of all of them that he was "the Messiah of God."

After the disciples declared their faith in him as the Messiah, Jesus goes on to reveal that as Messiah he "must suffer many things . . .  be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life."

Though aware of what he had to undergo, Jesus remained obedient to the Father's will. As he prayed in Gethsemane,  "Father, if it is your will, remove this cup from me;  still not my will but yours be done."  (Lk 22: 42)

This is the path and way for anyone who wishes to follow Christ: "If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me."

St. Padre Pio followed the Lord in his life of simplicity and generous service to the Lord in endless hours in the confessional. His life and example teach us, it is possible to follow the Lord in whatever life we may have.
