1 Kgs 3: 4- 13 I Mk 6: 30 - 34

St. Blase (d. 316), Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, was martyred under Licinius, Many cures are attributed to his intercession: there is a special blessing of throats on this day invoking the intercession of St. Blase.

St. Ansgar (d. 865), Bishop of Hamburg, a Benedictine m1ss1onary to Denmark and Sweden, is the "Apostle of the North" and Patron of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland

FROM THE 1ST READING:             I Kgs 3: 5, 9- 12

It was in Gibeon, during the night, that Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, "Ask what you want me to give you." ...

Solomon answered, "Give me, therefore, an understanding mind in governing our people that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this multitude of people of yours?"

Yahweh was pleased that Solomon had made this request. And he told him, "Because you have requested this rather than long life or wealth or even vengeance on your enemies; indeed, because you have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I shall grant your request. I now give you a wise and discerning mind such as no one has had before you nor anyone after you shall ever have. "

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Mk 6: 30- 32

The apostles returned and reported to Jesus all they had done and taught. Then he said to them, "Go off by yourselves to a remote place and have rest." For there were so many people coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.

REFLECTION

In the first reading King Solomon asks for wisdom and a discerning heart to properly govern his people. How many of us would ask for wisdom and spiritual gifts rather than fame and wealth and great success? God give Solomon what he asked for and fame and wealth besides. May we value wisdom and spiritual gifts above wealth, power and success.

In the Gospel reading Jesus and his disciples showed their complete dedication to their task of preaching the Good News and ministering to people: they were so busy "that the apostles had no time even to eat." Jesus tells them to get rest in a secluded place by themselves.

Are we as enthusiastic about our work and life concerns as Jesus and the apostles were about preaching the Good News about the kingdom of God? How enthusiastic are we about sharing the Good News with others? How enthusiastic are we in our Christian life?
