WEDNESDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

JULY 27, 2005
WEDNESDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

EXODUS 34:29-35
As Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the
commandments in his hands, he did not know that the skin of his face
had become radiant while he conversed with the LORD. When Aaron, then,
and the other children of Israel saw Moses and noticed how radiant the
skin of his face had become, they were afraid to come near him. Only
after Moses called to them did Aaron and all the rulers of the
community come back to him. Moses then spoke to them. Later on, all the
children of Israel came up to him, and he enjoined on them all that the
LORD had told him on Mount Sinai. When he finished speaking with them,
he put a veil over his face. Whenever Moses entered the presence of the
LORD to converse with him, he removed the veil until he came out again.
On coming out, he would tell the children of Israel all that had been
commanded. Then the children of Israel would see that the skin of
Moses' face was radiant; so he would again put the veil over his face
until he went in to converse with the LORD.

MATTHEW 13:44-46
Jesus said to his disciples: "The Kingdom of heaven is like a
treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and
out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again,
the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has
and buys it."

REFLECTION
After the incident of the golden calf was settled, Moses put up a Tent
of Meeting outside the camp. Israelites could go there to speak with
God. Moses, more intimately than anyone else, entered into converse
with God. When he himself went to the Tent of Meeting, Exodus says,
"Yahweh would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his
neighbor."

In one of these conversations in the Tent of Meeting, God instructed
Moses to ascend Mount Sinai once again. He was to bring with him two
stone tablets like the ones he smashed when he discovered the people
worshipping the golden calf. God would write the Ten Commandments on
these new tablets.

Moses stays on the mountain for forty days and nights in mystical
oneness with the Lord. When he comes down at last to the camp, God's
glory radiates from his face. The people fear to draw near to him.
Moses calls them to come to him and tells them all that Yahweh had said
to him on the mountain. When not talking to the people, Moses veils
his face. Thereafter whenever he entered the Tent of Meeting to talk
with the Lord, he would remove the veil. Listening to God's
word in the Tent renewed the radiance on Moses' face and he would have
to put on the veil again before coming out among the people.

There is a long tradition in the Church that intimate closeness to God
does have an effect on a saint's body, making it the source of a
heavenly light. From the earliest days of Christianity, down though
the centuries, artists have given expression to this belief by placing
halos about the heads of holy people.

One commentary sees the supernatural radiance that emanates from the
saints as God's pledge and promise that all of us are called to the
wonderful moment in the end-time when-fully united with God who is
love-we will be literally bathed in his light.

PRAYER
"Lord Jesus, reveal to me the true riches of your kingdom. Help me to
set my heart on you alone as the treasure beyond compare with any
other. Free my heart of any inordinate desires or attachment to other
things that I may freely give to you all that I have in joy and
gratitude for all that you have given to me. May I always find joy and
delight in your presence."
