TUESDAY, Commemoration of All Jesuit Departed
November 5, 2019 – TUESDAY, Commemoration of All Jesuit Departed
Violet.
Rom 14: 7 – 9, 10b – 12 / Jn 6: 37 – 40
On 02 November the Church prays for all the Faithful Departed. Today the Society of Jesus prays for all the Departed of the Society of Jesus: may these Companions of Jesus be rewarded with eternal joy and glory with God.
FROM THE 1ST READING: Rom 14: 7 – 9
In fact none of us lives for himself or dies for himself. If we live, we live for the Lord, and, if we die, we die for the Lord. Either in life or in death, we belong to the Lord. Christ experienced death and life to be Lord of the living and the dead.
GOSPEL READING: Jn 6: 37 – 40
Jesus said, "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I shall not turn away. For I have come from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of the One who sent me.
"And the will of him who sent me is that I lose nothing of what he has given me but instead that I raise it up on the last day."
REFLECTION
In the same way that we, the Church on earth, honor the Church in glory in the Solemnity of All Saints on 1 November and remember the dead in the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed on 2 November, the Society of Jesus confirms its oneness and companionship in its celebration of All Jesuit Saints and Blessed and today's Commemoration of all Jesuit Departed.

The great majority of departed Jesuits in the Philippines are buried in the Jesuit cemetery at Sacred Heart Novitiate in Novaliches, Quezon City. For Jesuits themselves and those who have studied or worked with Jesuits, visits to the Jesuit burial places hopefully bring back pleasant memories of so many dedicated Jesuit missionaries, teachers and administrators, confessors and counselors, companions and friends
The individual lapida at the cemetery gives the name and three key dates of the departed Jesuit: of his birth, entrance [or birth] into the Society and death.
In the first reading Paul reminds us that "none of us lives for himself, nor dies for himself. If we live, we live for the Lord, and, if we die, we die for the Lord. Either in life or death, we belong to the Lord."
A person's entrance into the Society of Jesus marks his commitment to give his life to the Lord and his Church and that "in life or death [he] belongs to the Lord."
Today is a good time to pray for the Jesuit Dead, especially those who have taught us or worked with us or somehow touched our lives. It is a good reminder that all of us, like the Jesuits and other religious and clerics in the Church, "either in life or death, [we] belong to the Lord.."
FINALLY, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
Have a good day!
