MONDAY 4TH WEEK OF ADVENT

DECEMBER 22, 2008
MONDAY 4TH WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

1 SAMUEL 1:24-28
After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along
with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and
brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. When they had
slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli, and she said to
him, "As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here
beside you praying to the LORD. I prayed for this child, and the LORD
has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For
his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped
the LORD there.

LUKE 1:46-56
And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in
God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his
servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the
Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name. His mercy
extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has
performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are
proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their
thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with
good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his
servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his
descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers." Mary stayed with
Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

REFLECTION
The Lord calls each one of us, as He called Mary to a specific
vocation. He longs for us to respond as she did. There are times when
it is hard for us to emulate Mary's joy. We may be burdened by work,
challenges, worries, the many trials of life. When this happens, we
should learn from Mary's example to ponder the wonders God has done in
history and in each of our own lives. He created us. He makes Himself
known to us through prayer, scripture and the teaching of the Church
and He continuously showers blessings upon us.

As with Mary, our hearts should express our earnest desire to thank
God for all the things He has done for us. In His love He created us,
and in His generosity He has given us all that we are and all that we
have. In His compassion, He upholds and sustains us every day of our
life. In His mercy, He forgives us whenever we sin and allows us to
return to Him.

Let us rejoice today as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Let us ask Mary our mother to help us give our life to Jesus in the
same way as she did.
