SATURDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

JUNE 15, 2013
SATURDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

2 Cor 5:14-21 / Ps 103: 1-2. 3-4. 9-10. 11-12 / Mt 5:33-37

2 Corinthians 5:14-21
Indeed the love of Christ holds us and we realize that if he died for all, all have died. He died for all so that those who live may live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and rose again for them. And so from now on, we do not regard anyone from a human point of view; and even if we once knew Christ personally, we should now regard him in another way. For that same reason, the one who is in Christ is a new creature. For him the old things have passed away; a new world has come. All this is the work of God who in Christ reconciled us to himself, and who entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation. Because in Christ God reconciled the world with himself, no longer taking into account their trespasses and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we present ourselves as ambassadors in the name of Christ, as if God himself makes an appeal to you through us. Let God reconcile you; this we ask you in the name of Christ. He had no sin, but God made him bear our sin, so that in him we might share the holiness of God.

Matthew 5:33-37
You have also heard that people were told in the past: Do not break your oath; an oath sworn to the Lord must be kept. But I tell you this: do not take oaths. Do not swear by the heavens, for they are God's throne, nor by the earth, because it is his footstool, nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king. Do not even swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. Say yes when you mean yes, and say no when you mean no. Anything else you say comes from the devil.

REFLECTION
It is common to hear the words "I swear I will do it." However, more often than not, we fail in fulfilling what we have said. In today's gospel we are taught not to make such unbreakable oaths. This is one way of hurting others and causing broken friendships. Same is true in our relationship with God. We cannot just say "Lord, I will surely do this and that for love of you." Then, either we forget what we promised, or simply decide not to do it. How we displease the Lord with this lie! How much more if we swear in His Name without honor and truth. It is a clear violation of the second commandment - using His name in vain which is a mockery of what is holy and true. What the Lord asks of us is just our yes or no and live up to it. A yes or no that means committing ourselves to what we have agreed to do. The Book of Revelation says that we must be either hot or cold, not lukewarm, otherwise the Lord will spew us out. Jesus is asking that we be firm in our decisions. When we have chosen to follow him, we should not wiggle or waver, for by doing so, we fail our God because we are yielding to the devil's temptations to doubt Him. Adam and Eve were the devil's first victims, followed by a succession of frustrations to God's plan, until Jesus came along and proved that it is possible to overcome this evil power and set God's plan aright. We cannot be complacent Christians. The holy saints throughout the history of the Church have proven the power of love over evil, triumph over sin, even over suffering and death.

Let us ask our Lord Jesus to endow us with the grace to always remain firm in our yes and to follow him and to carry our crosses. We also ask our dear Mother Mary to intercede for us so that, like her, we can also say our `fiat' or `yes' to the Lord.
