THURSDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER 13, 2005
THURSDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

ROMANS 3:21-30
Brothers and sisters: Now the righteousness of God has been manifested
apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets,
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who
believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived
of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the
redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through
faith, by his Blood, to prove his righteousness because of the
forgiveness of sins previously committed, through the forbearance of
God - to prove his righteousness in the present ime, that he might be
righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus. What occasion is
there then for boasting? It is ruled out. On what principle, that of
works? No, rather on the principle of faith. For we consider that a
person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Does God
belong to Jews alone? Does he not belong to Gentiles, too? Yes, also to
Gentiles, for God is one and will justify the circumcised on the basis
of faith and the uncircumcised hrough
faith.

LUKE 11:47-54
The Lord said: "Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom
your fathers killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to
the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the
building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, `I will send to them
prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute' in
order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the
prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel
to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple
building. Yes, I tell you, this veneration will be charged with their
blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of
knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to
enter." When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with
hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, for they
were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

REFLECTION
If we felt that we have hurt or offended others, we do our best to
redeem ourselves from the mistakes we have committed against them and
ourselves. We may seek atonement as the only way to take away the
guilt in our hearts. Or, we may contribute time and money to
charitable projects to atone for the sins committed against others.

We often forget that God had sent his only Son to atone for our sins.
We have sinned and instead, it was Jesus who died to atone for our
wrong doings. The grace of God is with us through the redemption in
Christ Jesus. Do we always remember to be grateful for this grace?

Today's gospel admonishes not only the people who killed the prophets
that God sent but also the people who condoned the killing and built
their tombs. God's messengers and servants served in the best of their
ability. But still, there are those who, with the slightest
provocation, chose to criticize them, find faults and continue to
persecute them. It's no wonder that the "Pharisees began to oppose
Jesus fiercely and tried to find fault in the things that he said".

Let us reflect on our lives, in our actions, thoughts and deeds. Can
we do more than be true to the teachings of Jesus, help those who are
dedicated in serving the Church, especially the priests, bishops, nuns,
religious ... those of whom whose task is to serve the true Shepherd?

PRAYER
"Lord, may your word take root in my heart and transform my thoughts
and actions. Give me wisdom and understanding to know your mind and

FRIDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER 14, 2005
FRIDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

ROMANS 4:1-8
Brothers and sisters: What can we say that Abraham found, our ancestor
according to the flesh? Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis
of his works, he has reason to boast; but this was not so in the sight
of God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it
was credited to him as righteousness. A worker's wage is credited not
as a gift, but as something due. But when one does not work, yet
believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as
righteousness. So also David declares the
blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from
works: Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins
are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record.

LUKE 12:1-7
At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were
trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his
disciples, "Beware of the leaven-that is, the hypocrisy-of the
Pharisees. "There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor
secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the
darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind
closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my
friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can
do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who
after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be
afraid of that one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet
not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your
head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than
many sparrows."

REFLECTION
Many of the martyrs who died for their Christian faith were ordinary
people. They were teachers, students, social workers, nurses, servants
or slaves. They came from all social standings, some from the higher
ranks of the clergy, some from the rich, some from the lowest or the
poorest level of society.

>From this latter perspective about the martyrs, we may have an insight
of perhaps why Jesus told the disciples and within clear earshot of the
crowd, not to be afraid of the persecution and martyrdom many of them
would suffer. His message applies not only to a select group of twelve
but also to those would-be followers of Christ.

We sometimes think that present day martyrs are the missionaries in
places like Africa and China, who were arrested and persecuted because
of their beliefs. We may assume that martyrdom is limited to those
with religious vocation while we, as ordinary Christians, only need to
pray and perform good deeds to become ardent followers of God.

In our lives as Christians we may face some form of persecution because
of our religious beliefs. Persecution may not necessarily be in the
form of an arrest warrant or a physical assault. It also occurs in the
form of jokes, indirect insults, and atheistic challenges against our
Christian beliefs.

Let us take up the challenge to defend our faith, not only because it
is our duty as Christians, but also because we love him, our
convictions and our faith in Him.

PRAYER
"Lord, may the light of your word free my heart from the deception of
sin and consume me with a burning love for your truth and
righteousness."
