MONDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

JUNE 7, 2010
MONDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

FIRST KINGS 17:1-7
Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, 'By the life
of Yahweh, God of Israel, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor
rain these coming years unless I give the word.' The word of Yahweh
came to him, 'Go away from here, go east and hide by the torrent of
Cherith, east of the Jordan. You can drink from the stream, and I have
ordered the ravens to bring you food there.' So he set out and did as
Yahweh had said; he went and stayed by the torrent of Cherith, east of
the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread in the morning and meat in
the evening, and he quenched his thirst at the stream. But after a
while the stream dried up, for the country had had no rain.

MATTHEW 5:1-12
Seeing the crowds, he went onto the mountain. And when he was seated
his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak. This is what he
taught them: How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of Heaven
is theirs. Blessed are the gentle: they shall have the earth as
inheritance. Blessed are those who mourn: they shall be comforted.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for uprightness: they shall
have their fill. Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown
them. Blessed are the pure in heart: they shall see God. Blessed are
the peacemakers: they shall be recognized as children of God. Blessed
are those who are persecuted in the cause of uprightness: the kingdom
of Heaven is theirs. 'Blessed are you when people abuse you and
persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you falsely on my
account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven;
this is how they persecuted the prophets before you.

REFLECTION
The beatitudes are like the constitution of the Christian. The
teachings of Christ are real. They start with the word "blessed". It
means that blessings will come, for people who follow all that is
mentioned in the Gospel.

And the blessings are real. They are to be found, not only in Heaven,
but also on Earth! There are no limits to the blessings that the Lord
will give to us. They include both materials and spiritual gifts. They
are also words of consolation for us in the moments we feel down, or
are oppressed. There is value in the virtues in a world where it seems
that injustice and greed reap rewards.

All the beatitudes underlie a deep trust in the Lord at all times.
They reveal the deep love of the Lord for us at all times also. So
take the last sentence to heart- Rejoice and be glad! Let us offer
today this joy to our God who sees all and is the Alpha and Omega of
all.
