Monday, 10th Week in Ordinary Time

06 June 2016

Monday, 10th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Norbert, Bishop;

St. Marcellin Champagnat, Priest

Green.

1 Kgs 17:1 – 6 / Mt 5:1 – 12

St. Norbert (1080 – 1134), born in Germany, was consecrated Archbishop of Magdeburg; he preached religious and moral reforms.

A French priest, St. Marcellin Champagnat (1789 – 1840) founded the Marist Brothers (FMS) for the education of the youth in 1817. Beatified in 1955, he was canonized by Pope St. John Paul II in 1999.

Gospel Reading: Mt 5:1 - 12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. He sat down and his disciples gathered around him then he spoke and began to teach them: "Fortunate are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Fortunate are those who mourn, they shall be comforted.  Fortunate are the gentle, they shall possess the land. Fortunate are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.

"Fortunate are the merciful, for they shall find mercy. Fortunate are those with a pure heart, for they shall see God. Fortunate are those who work for peace, they shall be called children of God. Fortunate are those who are persecuted for the cause of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Fortunate are you, when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you because you are my followers.  Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you in God. This is how this people persecuted the prophets who lived before you."

Reflection

Today's Gospel reading is the beginning of Matthew's version of the Lord's Sermon on the Mount. To many the "Beatitudes" may seem unwise and impractical; yet I understood fully and deeply reflected upon, they are indeed fruits of great wisdom.

In a way these ideals may provide keys to solve many of the problems in our broken world. The reality is that everyone is poor and broken in so many different ways.

These beatitudes or blessings describe those who are open to the grace of God and allow the reign of God to become active in their lives in the midst of the brokenness and sinfulness of the world.

Given only in the Matthean version, Our Lord warns his disciples of persecutions to come; at the same time he consoles them, comparing them to the prophets of old who were also persecuted for their work.

Indeed in our lives, we may find it so difficult to live by what the beatitudes teach us, especially if what we do goes against "conventional wisdom."  However, it is possible, if we will allow the Holy Spirit into our lives to enable us to live in the spirit of the beatitudes.

As we reflect on the way we live and the way we deal with others, can we truly say that we live out the beatitudes in our lives?

10th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

05 June 2016
10th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Cycle C.  Green.

1 Kgs 17:17 – 24 / Gal 1:11 – 19 / Lk 7:11 - 17

From the 1st Reading: 1 Kgs 17: 17- 24
After this, the son of this housewife became ill.  And such was his illness that he stopped breathing. . . .

Taking him from her lap, he carried him up to the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed. Then he called on Yahweh, "O Yahweh, my God, will you afflict even the widow with whom I am residing by letting her son die?" Then he stretched himself on the child three times . . . , "O Yahweh. My God, let this child's breath return to him."  Yahweh listened to the pleading of Elijah and the child's breath returned to him and he lived. . . . He gave him to his mother, "See, your son is alive."

Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I am certain that you are a man of God, and that your words really came from Yahweh."

From the 2nd Reading: Gal 1:11 - 16
Let me remind you, brothers and sisters, that the Gospel we preached to you is not a human message, nor did I receive it from anyone.  I was not taught of it but it came to me as a revelation from Christ Jesus.  You have heard of my previous activity in the Jewish community; I furiously persecuted the Church of God and tried to destroy it. . .

But one day God called me out of his great love, he who had chosen me from my mother's womb, and he was pleased to reveal in me his Son, that I might make him known among the pagan nations.

From the Gospel Reading: Lk 7:11 – 16
A little later Jesus went to a town called Naim and many of his disciples went with him, as he reached the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out.  He was the only son of his mother and she was a widow; there followed a large crowd of townspeople.

On seeing her, the Lord had pity and said, "Don't cry."  Then he came up and touched the stretcher and the men who carried it stopped.  Jesus then said, "Young man awake, I tell you."  And the dead man got up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.  A holy fear came over them all and they praised God saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people."

Reflection
It is said that, for a mother, nothing is more painful than burying her own child.  We see the pain and sorrow of the mothers in today's readings from the 1st Book of Kings and the Gospel of Luke.  The pain and sorrow are greater because both mothers were widows and they have lost their only sons.

Elijah had been staying with the widow of Zarephath and her child and they had their meal and jug of oil miraculously replenished during the severe drought.  Jesus met the funeral procession of the young and only son of the widow of Naim on his coming to Naim.

Death, sorrow, pain and suffering are part and parcel of human existence.  Evil has become a part of human existence.  How many times have we asked God, "Why is this happening to me? What have I done to deserve this pain and suffering?"

In today's readings, both widows had their only sons restored to life: by the prayer of the prophet Elijah and by Christ the Son of God himself.

In our pains and sorrows, in our difficulties and dark moments in life, may we maintain our faith in the living and loving God.

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER DIARY INTENTIONS:

Anie, Leanne, Mike, Airel & Lenie

Immaculate Heart of Mary

04 June 2016
Immaculate Heart of Mary
Memorial.      White.

2 Tm 4:1 – 8 / Lk 2: 41 – 51

Now celebrated on the day after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this memorial has its roots from the life and apostolate of St. John Eudes (1601 – 1680) for the promotion of devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesu and Mary. On the twenty-fifth anniversary (1942) of the apparitions of Mary in Fatima, Pope Pius XII dedicated the Church and the human race to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

From the 1st Reading: 2 Tm 4:1 - 2
In the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living snd the dead, and by the hope I have of his coming and his kingdom, I urge you to preach the Word, in seaon and out of season, reproving, rebuking or advising, always with patience and providing instruction.

From the Gospel Reading: Lk 2:42 – 43, 45- 51
When Jesus was twelve years old, he went up with them according to the custom for this feast. After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem and his parents did not know it. . . .

As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem searching for him, and on the third day they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. And all the people were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

His parents were very surprised when they saw him and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I were very worried while searching for you." Then he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Do you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand this answer.

Jesus went down with them, returning to Nazareth, and he continued to be subject to them. As for his mother, she kept all these things in her heart.

Reflection
In the first reading, Paul tells us to preach God's Word. This may not be easy in this world of secularism when it would be much more convenient to do nothing and not to say anything about God's Word. We should remember that to preach the Word is a necessary task of our being baptized in Christ. And God has promised us his grace and help to do this.

When Jesus went missing for three days, he was found by Joseph and Mary preaching in the Temple.  When they asked him why he did this, he said that this was the task that God his Father had given him.  Mary kept these words in her heart, not showing any anger towards Jesus, for she understood that this was God's mission for him.  We should be aware when God is doing something special in our lives or in the life of someone else as Mary did.

THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

03 June 2016, Friday
THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Solemnity.   White.

Ez 34: 11 – 16 / Rom 5: 5b – 11 / Lk 15: 3 – 7

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was first celebrated in Rennes, France on 31 August 1670, through the efforts of St. John Eudes (1602 – 1680). The "great apparition" of the Sacred Heart to St. Mary Margaret Alacoque (1647 – 1690) on 16 June 1875 is the main impetus for the modern devotion to the Sacred Heart.  Officially celebrated in France by 1785, the Feast of the Sacred Heart was extended to the universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1856.

1st Reading: Ez: 11 – 16
Indeed Yahweh says this:  I myself will care for my sheep and watch over them.  As the shepherd looks after his clock when he finds them scattered, so will I watch over my sheep and gather them from all the places where they were scattered in a time of cloud and fog.  I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the other countries. I will lead them to their own land and pasture them on the mountains of Israel in all the valleys and inhabited regions of the land.  I will take them to good pastures on the high mountains of Israel.  They will rest where the grazing is good and feed in lush pastures on the heights of Israel.  I myself will tend my sheep and let them rest, word of Yahweh.  I will search for the lost and lead back the strays.  I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the fat and strong will be eliminated.  I will shepherd my flock with justice.

2nd Reading: Rom 5: 5b – 11
Consider, moreover, the time that Christ died for us:  when we were still sinners and unable to do anything.  Few would accept to die for an upright person; although, for a very good person, perhaps someone would dare to die.  But see how God manifested his love for us:  while we were still sinners, Christ died for us and we have become just through his blood.  With much more reason now he will save us from any condemnation.  Once enemies, we have been reconciled with God through the death of his Son; with much more reason now we may be saved through his life.  Not only that, we feel secure in God because of Christ Jesus, our Lord, through whom we have been reconciled.

Gospel Reading: Lk 15: 3 - 7.
So Jesus told them this parable, "Who among you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, will not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and seek out the lost one till he finds it?  And finding it, will he not joyfully carry it home on his shoulders? Then he will call his friends and neighbors together and say: 'Celebrate with me for I have found my lost sheep.'  I tell you, just so, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine upright who do not need to repent."

Reflection
Today's Solemnity honors the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Since the early Church, there has been special veneration of the Heart of Jesus. In venerating the Heart of Jesus, people venerated God's love for everyone.

The Church today invites us to reflect on what it means to live our lives in such a way that we imitate and reveal the loving heart of God to all the world.  The heart is seen as the center of a person, the place where he makes his choices which affect life and everything related to it.  Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us that it is in the sacred heart and humanity of Jesus that we find the perfect pattern for becoming fully human ourselves.

Today's first reading speaks of God shepherding his sheep, promising to protect them from harm, saving from danger and bringing back to safety those who have gone astray.  Those hurt are cared for and healed.

The second reading shows the love of God manifested in Jesus.  The reading reminds us that God loved us so much that he sent his only begotten Son to die for us.  Jesus died on the cross because of his love for us, that we would be reconciled to God.

And it is that reconciliation we hear in the Gospel reading:  there will be more joy in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people who had no need of repentance.  Only God who loves us would find so much joy in the repentant sinner.

The celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us of our mission in our culture and world which are slowly becoming forgetful of God as the source of love and life.  The month of June is a special time in the Church for prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We pray that we lift up ourselves and the world to the One we could really trust.  We are assured Jesus will not disappoint us. His heart still beats with love and mercy for us and all the world.

Thursday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time

02 June 2016
Thursday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time
Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs
Green.

2 Tm 2:8 – 15 / Mk 12:28 – 34

Sts. Marcellinus (d. 304), a priest, and Peter (d. 304), an exorcist, were martyred under Diocletian.

From the Gospel Reading: Mk 12:28 - 34
A teacher of the Law had been listening to this discussion [on the resurrection] and admired how Jesus answered them.  So he came up and asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"

Jesus answered, "The first is: Hear, Israel!  The Lord, our God, is One Lord; and you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with al your strength. And after this comes another one: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these two."

The teacher of the Law said to him, "Well spoken, Master, you are right when you say that he is one and there is no other.  To love him with all our heart, with all our understanding and with all our strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves is more important than any burnt offering or sacrifice."

Jesus approved this answer and said, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." But after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Reflection
According to the dictionary, to understand is to grasp the meaning of words, a language, etc.  We feel joy and happiness when we are understood by someone.  Likewise when we are able to understand the complexities of anything, we experience relief and satisfaction.  On the other hand, when we are not understood and when we do not understand what is going on around us, we become frustrated, irritable and gloomy.

In today's Gospel reading Jesus was joyful and relieved on hearing that one of the Scribes understood his teaching.  In a previous episode, Jesus must have felt disappointed, even frustrated, when the Sadducees asked him about the resurrection.  The Sadducees were teachers and were expected to know about the resurrection.  Yet Jesus said they were misled in their understanding of the resurrection, especially since they really wished to show Jesus was wrong or to trap Jesus in what he says.

The Gospel reading today challenges us to re-examine and reflect on our understanding of the meaning of "loving God and neighbor."   We need to show our understanding in our lives showing that it "is more important than any burnt offerings or sacrifice."  We must remember that   our faith is lived not only in fulfilling the "Law" but in loving relationship with the God who loved us first.

Let us pray for a deeper understanding and appreciation of God's love for us in order that we may the feel joy it brings and the power it gives to proclaim it to all the world.

Wednesday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time

01 June 2016
Wednesday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time
St. Justin, Martyr
Memorial.        Red.

2 Tm 1:1 – 3, 6–12 / Mk 12:18 – 27

St. Justin (d 165), a layman from Samaria, was martyred in Rome during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Called "the Philosopher," he was among the greatest Christian apologists of the 2nd century.

Gospel Reading: Mk 12:18 - 27
The Sadducees also came to Jesus. Since they claim that there is no resurrection, they questioned him in this way, "Master, in the Scriptures Moses gave us this law: 'If anyone dies and leaves a wife but no children, his brother must take the wife and give her a child who will be considered the child of his deceased brother.' Now, there were seven brothers. The first married a wife, but he died without leaving any children. The second took the wife and he, too, died leaving no children. The same thing happened to the third.  Finally the seven died leaving no children. Last of all the woman died. Now, in the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife? For the seven had her as wife."

Jesus replied, "You could be wrong in this regard because you understand neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.  When they rise from the dead, men and women do not marry but are like the angels in heaven.

"Now, about the resurrection of the dead, have you never reflected on the chapter of the burning bush in the book of Moses? God said to him: I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now, he is the God, not of the dead but of the living. You are totally wrong."

Reflection:
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus tells us that the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob is the God of the living.  Furthermore, Jesus tells us that our spirits are renewed and transformed through God's divine intervention. We are destined to be more of what we are now on this earth, so we cannot compare this reality to what awaits us in heaven. We must allow God to be God and to be open with how he directs us.

For us Christians, followers and lovers of the Lord, it is imperative for us all to be faithful and loyal to the teachings and commandments Jesus left to his Apostles and the Church.  It is not a matter of choice.  "If you love me," Jesus says, "you will keep my commandments."  He never minces his words.  He means what he says and says only what he means.

If we truly believe this, why do we continually refuse to give God the due worship that belongs to him alone?  How convinced are we that we teach others, especially the young, more by example than by words?  What does our example tell about our faith?  Let us remember that our life, sometimes, may be the only book other people may or will ever read.

Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

31 May 2016
Tuesday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time
Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Feast.

Zep 3:14 – 18a  (or Rom 12: 9 –16) / Lk 1:39 – 56

From the Gospel Reading: Lk 1:39 – 56
Mary then set out for a town in the Hills of Judah.  She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with Holy Spirit, and giving a loud cry, said, "You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me?  The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true!"

And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed.

"The Mighty One has done great things for me, holy is his Name! From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promised our fathers, Abraham and his descendants forever."

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home.

Reflection
In the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel announced that Mary was chosen to be the Mother of the Son of God and that her cousin Elizabeth in her old age conceived a son and was in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible with God. Filled with joy and concern for her cousin, Mary went in haste to visit Elizabeth.

Upon greeting Elizabeth, the child leaped for joy in her womb for the divine Life in Mary's womb blessed him. Elizabeth filled with the Spirit exclaimed how blessed Mary was. Then Mary sang praising the goodness of God to herself and to His people.

Two very important prayers came from this encounter – the  second part of the Hail Mary and the Magnificat. The Visitation also showed us Mary's active role in bringing with joy the Good News to others, especially the needy – her going forth from her own comfort zone to be of service to others; her being the intercessor of the divine Life; her humility and acknowledgment of God's goodness. How has Mary influenced your life?
Let us pray that, guided by the Spirit and through Mary's intercession, the Word may bear good fruit and that our work of evangelization may be marked with enthusiasm and vitality.

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER DIARY INTENTIONS:

THANKSGIVING
Dennis, Wendy, Gabe, Aleks, Iñigo Jugueta

OTHER INTENTIONS:
For the healing & speedy recovery of Alfredo Dy.

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!

Monday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time

30 May 2016
Monday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time
Green.

2 Pt 1:2 – 7 / Mk 12:1 – 12

Gospel Reading: Mk 12:1 - 12
Using parables, Jesus went on to say, "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a hole for the wine press and built a watch tower. Then he leased the vineyard to tenants and went abroad.

"In due time he sent a servant to receive from the tenants his share of the fruit. But they seized the servant, struck him and sent him back empty-handed. Again the man sent another servant. They also struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. He sent another and they killed him. In the same way they treated many others: some they beat up and others they killed.

"One was still left, his beloved son. And so, last of all, he sent him to the tenants, for he said, 'They will respect my son.' But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the one who is to inherit the vineyard. Let's kill him and the property will be ours.' So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

"Now what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." And Jesus added, "Have you not read this text of the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected has become the keystone; this is the Lord's doing and we marvel at it?" They wanted to arrest him, for they realized that Jesus meant this parable for them, but they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

Reflection
In today's Gospel, we can see our Lord Jesus using a parable to illustrate his message for his enemies who were planning to get rid of him. He might have intended it as a challenge to his detractors to change their minds. However if we were in their place, could our reactions be any different from theirs? The teaching of our Lord Jesus was so world-shattering to his audience. It can also threaten the livelihood of most of the people of Jerusalem because the economy of the city supported the activities of the temple. Therefore, it is not too difficult for the people of Jerusalem to reject the teachings of our Lord who in some ways threaten their way of life.

As we reflect on the present situation in our own country with its particular political, social or economic problems, are we willing to go against the "conventional wisdom" to compromise our values in order to "survive" in our broken and sinful world with its distorted values? Where do we stand in the various issues confronting us? Do we support and accept the stand of the Church on these issues? Can we let go of our fears and put our hope and trust in the loving providence of our Heavenly Father as our Lord Jesus had taught us for all our needs?

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!

THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

29 May 2016
THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
Solemnity.           White.          Cycle C.

Gen 14: 18 – 20 / 1 Cor 11: 23 – 26

Sequence, Lauda Sion. Lk 9: 11b - 17

From the 2nd Reading: 1 Cor 11: 23 - 26
This is the tradition of the Lord that I received and that in my turn I have handed on to you; the Lord Jesus, on the night that he was delivered up, took bread and, after giving thanks, broke it, saying, "This is my body which is broken for you; do this in memory of me."

In the same manner, taking the cup after the supper, he said, "This cup is the new Covenant in my blood.  Whenever you drink it, do it in memory of me."  So whenever you eat of this bread and drink from this cup, you are proclaiming the death of the Lord until he comes.

Gospel Reading: Lk 9: 12 - 17
The day was drawing to a close and the Twelve drew near to tell him, "Send the crowd away and let them go into the villages and farms around, to find lodging and food, for we are here in a lonely place."  But Jesus replied, "You yourselves give them something to eat."  They answered, "We have only five loaves and two fish; do you want us to go and buy food enough for all this crowd?" For there were about five thousand men.  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Make the people sit down in groups of fifty."

So they made all of them settle down.  Jesus then took the five loaves and two fish, and raising his eyes to heaven, pronounced a blessing over them; he broke them and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the crowd. They ate and everyone had enough, and when they gathered up what was left, twelve baskets were filled with broken pieces.

Reflection
Do we really need to celebrate this Solemnity of Corpus Christi?  Don't we already celebrate the Eucharist every day?  Don't we already honor and reverence the Eucharist at every Mass?

The forty revelations and four apparitions of the Lord to St. Mary Margaret Alacoque are essentially about the Eucharist.  These happened in 17th century France where about ninety per cent of people attended Sunday Mass.  And yet Jesus lamented sacrileges and lack of respect of people.

During the second apparition in 1673, Mary Margaret heard the following from the Lord: "I am parched with a thirsting desire that men may worship me in the most Holy Sacrament."  Jesus lamented that, though churches were well attended, very few people really worshipped him and that very few loved him in the Eucharist.

According to estimates in the early nineties about ten per cent of Catholics in the Philippines attend Sunday Mass.  Of this number, how many sincerely worship and love him?

At the fourth apparition in 1675, with Mary Margaret before the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus disclosed his Sacred Heart, "Behold this Heart, which has loved men so much, which has been unsparing of everything that, in order to declare its love, it has exhausted and consumed itself; yet the majority of men repay me with ingratitude by their disgraceful conduct, their sacrileges, their indifference and their contempt, which they show me in this Sacrament of Love."

Jesus continued, "and what causes me the greatest suffering is that I am thus treated also by hearts consecrated to me. Therefore, I ask thee to procure the institution of a solemn festival on the Friday that follows Corpus Christi; on that day, the faithful shall receive the Sacrament of the Altar and also make reparation for the indignities inflicted on it during the days on which it is exposed for adoration."

The saints were a diverse lot, rich and poor, simple and educated, married and single, priests and lay.  But what is common among them, without any exception, is their deep love for the Eucharist.  Indeed for them the Eucharist is our Lord himself.

On this Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, let us bend on our knees for the grace of seeing him, loving him and serving him in the Eucharist.
