Immaculate Heart of Mary

04 June 2016
Immaculate Heart of Mary
Memorial.      White.

2 Tm 4:1 – 8 / Lk 2: 41 – 51

Now celebrated on the day after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this memorial has its roots from the life and apostolate of St. John Eudes (1601 – 1680) for the promotion of devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesu and Mary. On the twenty-fifth anniversary (1942) of the apparitions of Mary in Fatima, Pope Pius XII dedicated the Church and the human race to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

From the 1st Reading: 2 Tm 4:1 - 2
In the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living snd the dead, and by the hope I have of his coming and his kingdom, I urge you to preach the Word, in seaon and out of season, reproving, rebuking or advising, always with patience and providing instruction.

From the Gospel Reading: Lk 2:42 – 43, 45- 51
When Jesus was twelve years old, he went up with them according to the custom for this feast. After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem and his parents did not know it. . . .

As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem searching for him, and on the third day they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. And all the people were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

His parents were very surprised when they saw him and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I were very worried while searching for you." Then he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Do you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand this answer.

Jesus went down with them, returning to Nazareth, and he continued to be subject to them. As for his mother, she kept all these things in her heart.

Reflection
In the first reading, Paul tells us to preach God's Word. This may not be easy in this world of secularism when it would be much more convenient to do nothing and not to say anything about God's Word. We should remember that to preach the Word is a necessary task of our being baptized in Christ. And God has promised us his grace and help to do this.

When Jesus went missing for three days, he was found by Joseph and Mary preaching in the Temple.  When they asked him why he did this, he said that this was the task that God his Father had given him.  Mary kept these words in her heart, not showing any anger towards Jesus, for she understood that this was God's mission for him.  We should be aware when God is doing something special in our lives or in the life of someone else as Mary did.
