THURSDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

OCTOBER 21, 2010
THURSDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 3:14-21
This, then, is what I pray, kneeling before the Father, from whom
every fatherhood, in heaven or on earth, takes its name. In the
abundance of his glory may he, through his Spirit, enable you to grow
firm in power with regard to your inner self, so that Christ may live
in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on
love, with all God's holy people you will have the strength to grasp
the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; so that, knowing
the love of Christ, which is beyond knowledge, you may be filled with
the utter fullness of God. Glory be to him whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to him
from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for
ever and ever. Amen.

LUKE 12:49-53
'I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were
blazing already! There is a baptism I must still receive, and what
constraint I am under until it is completed! 'Do you suppose that I am
here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For
from now on, a household of five will be divided: three against two
and two against three; father opposed to son, son to father, mother to
daughter, daughter to mother, mother-in-law to daughter-in-law,
daughter-in-law to mother-in-law.'

REFLECTION
Many Christians are often disturbed by Jesus' declaration that he
would cast fire and cause division upon the earth. In order to
understand what Jesus meant, it is important to note that in the
Bible, fire is often used to symbolize God's glory, presence, Holy
Spirit or wrath against sin. The fire that Jesus speaks of both
purifies, cleanses and inspires a reverent fear of God.

In this chapter of Luke, Jesus states that even family loyalties would
be challenged on the basis of whether people accepted the kingdom of
God or not. Loyalty to Him takes precedence over ever y other
relationship. A true disciple loves God above all else and is willing
to forsake anyone or anything for Him, giving him a loyalty which
surpasses our earthly relationships. Family and friends can become our
enemies if they keep us from doing what we know God wants us to do —
only that which is good and according to His perfect will.

WEDNESDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

OCTOBER 20, 2010
WEDNESDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 3:2-12
You have surely heard the way in which God entrusted me with the grace
he gave me for your sake; he made known to me by a revelation the
mystery I have just described briefly- a reading of it will enable you
to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. This mystery,
as it is now revealed in the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets,
was unknown to humanity in previous generations: that the gentiles now
have the same inheritance and form the same Body and enjoy the same
promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I have been made the
servant of that gospel by a gift of grace from God who gave it to me
by the workings of his power. I, who am less than the least of all
God's holy people, have been entrusted with this special grace, of
proclaiming to the gentiles the unfathomable treasure of Christ and of
throwing light on the inner workings of the mystery kept hidden
through all the ages in God, the Creator of everything. The purpose of
this was, that now, through the Church, the principalities and ruling
forces should learn how many-sided God's wisdom is, according to the
plan which he had formed from all eternity in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In him we are bold enough to approach God in complete confidence,
through our faith in him;

LUKE 12:39-48
You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at
what time the burglar would come, he would not have let anyone break
through the wall of his house. You too must stand ready, because the
Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.' Peter said, 'Lord,
do you mean this parable for us, or for everyone?' The Lord replied,
'Who, then, is the wise and trustworthy steward whom the master will
place over his household to give them at the proper time their
allowance of food? Blessed that servant if his master's arrival finds
him doing exactly that. I tell you truly, he will put him in charge of
everything that he owns. But if the servant says to himself, "My
master is taking his time coming," and sets about beating the
menservants and the servant-girls, and eating and drinking and getting
drunk, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour
he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same
fate as the unfaithful. 'The servant who knows what his master wants,
but has got nothing ready and done nothing in accord with those
wishes, will be given a great many strokes of the lash. The one who
did not know, but has acted in such a way that he deserves a beating,
will be given fewer strokes. When someone is given a great deal, a
great deal will be demanded of that person; when someone is entrusted
with a great deal, of that person even more will be expected.

REFLECTION
Let us start our reflection: Lord Jesus, what in today's gospel
reading is for me from You? …expectant house owner…faithful and
prudent manager…faithful or unfaithful servant… or as Peter inquiries,
`Lord are telling this parable for me?' Speak O Lord, your servant
awaits.

The first reading shows us the full life lived by St. Paul, also known
as Saul in his previous faith and life orientation. He relates with
fondness his zeal then and now as he receives the new mission to which
the Risen Lord Jesus has called him. He clearly acknowledges the
charge and mission to the Gentile world as he pursues in relation to
the wider evangelization of the apostle in the church. He writes:
"This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried
out in Christ Jesus, our Lord in whom we have access to God in
boldness and confidence through faith in him."

In closing, we pray: Lord Jesus, with the boldness and confidence
through faith in You, let the words of the gospel "to whom much has
been given, much will be required" come alive in my life and heart for
Thine is the Power and the Glory, Amen .
