FRIDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

October 9, 2015 FRIDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

Sts. Denis, Bishop, and Companions, Martyrs;

St. John Leonardi, Priest

Green

Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2 / Lk 11:15-26

Reading: Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2

Gird yourselves, O priests, and weep; mourn, O ministers of the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! For the house of your God is deprived of grain and drink offering.

Proclaim a fast, call an assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land into the house of your God, and cry out to Yahweh, "What a dreadful day – the day of Yahweh that draws near and comes as ruin from the Almighty!"

Blow the trumpet in Zion, sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all dwellers in the land tremble, for the day of Yahweh is coming.

Yes, the day is fast approaching – a day of gloom and darkness, a day of clouds and blackness. A vast and mighty army comes, like dawn spreading over the mountain, such as has never occurred before nor will happen again in the future.

Gospel: Lk 11:15-26

Yet some of them said, "He drives out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the chief of the demons."  So others wanted to put him to the test by asking him for a heavenly sign. But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every nation divided by civil war is on the road to ruin, and will fall. If Satan also is divided, his empire is coming to an end. How can you say that I drive out demons by calling upon Beelzebul? If I drive them out by Beelzebul, by whom do your fellow members drive out demons? They will be your judge, then. But suppose I drive out demons by the finger of God; would not this mean that the kingdom of God has come upon you? As long as the strong and armed man guards his house, his goods are safe. But when a stronger one attacks and overcomes him, the challenger takes away all the weapons he relied on and disposes of his spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me, scatters. When the evil spirit goes out of a person, it wanders through dry lands looking for a resting place. And finding none, it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' When it comes, it finds the house swept and everything in order. Then it goes to fetch seven other spirits even worse than itself. They move in and settle there, so that the last state of that person is worse than the first."

Reflection:

St. Denis became the first bishop of Paris in the 3rd century. He suffered martyrdom near that city with two members of his clergy. In one of his writings he said that everyone who obeys the commandments is a martyr because he is witnessing to his faith by his deeds. He also said that a person who strives to maintain purity of mind and body is a martyr. One who helps the widow and the orphan is also a martyr as well as those who love the poor. In saying this, St. Denis makes simple Christian acts as something which God will obviously smile upon. So we are challenged to live our Christianity every day in thoughts, words and deeds.

The Gospel reminds us that the devil is real and that we must be on guard against him. Our Christian life is a daily combat on whether to do the right thing or not. The devil often tempts us to take the easy but wrong path. But with prayer and petition for God's guidance we are called to take the narrow road which will eventually lead us to life. As Christians we are invited to pray a lot and read the scriptures to help us understand God's thoughts, because only by doing so can we start to do God's will in our everyday life.

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER DIARY INTENTIONS:

IN MEMORIAM (+)

     ARCH. THOMAS S. DIOKNO

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!

THURSDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

October 8, 2015 THURSDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

Green

Mal 3:13-20b / Lk 11: 5-13

Reading: Mal 3:13-20

You say very harsh things about me, says Yahweh, and yet you say: "What harsh things did we say against you?" You say: "It is useless to serve God. There is no benefit in observing his commandments or in leading an austere life for his sake. Happy are the shameless! Those who do evil succeed in everything; though they provoke God, they remain unharmed."

Those were the very words of those who fear Yahweh. Yahweh listened and heard what they said. He ordered at once that the names of those who respect him and reverence his Name be written in a record.

And he declared, "They will be mine on the day I have already set. Then I shall care for them as a father cares for his obedient son. And you will see the different fates of the good and the bad, those who obey God and those who disobey him.

The day already comes, flaming as a furnace. On that day all the proud and evildoers will be burned like straw in the fire. They will be left without branches or roots. On the other hand the sun of justice will shine upon you who respect my Name and bring health in its rays. You will come out leaping like fattened calves. You will trample on the evildoers and they will be like ashes scattered on your way when I do this, says Yahweh.

Gospel Reading: Lk 11:5-13

Jesus said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to his house in the middle of the night and says: 'Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine who is traveling has just arrived and I have nothing to offer him.' Maybe your friend will answer from inside: 'Don't bother me now; the door is locked and my children and I are in bed, so I can't get up and give you anything.' But I tell you, even though he will not get up and attend to you because you are a friend, yet he will get up because you are a brother to him, and he will give you all you need. And so I say to you, 'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For the one who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to him who knocks the door will be opened.

If your child asks for a fish, will you give a snake instead? And if your child asks for an egg, will you give a scorpion? Even you evil people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more then will the Father in heaven give holy spirit to those who ask him!"

Reflection:

The Gospel today is not new to most of us. Christ's message of God's unending love is one that has resonated throughout the history of the Church. Christ's message of faith in the face of adversity or obstacles is one of the most enduring messages we receive in our Christian life. But despite the consistency of this gospel message, today's Gospel also visits us at different times in our lives. What we asked for and prayed for last year may no longer be the same thing that we are asking for from God this year. At the same time, we could have also been asking God for something for many years already but it seems our prayer has not been answered.  That being said, we are called to see a new meaning to this Gospel for today.

The Gospel, however, does not mean that God is a magical genie who grants us wishes. Through the words of Jesus, he is reminding us to pray every day to God and to realize the beauty of God's plan in our lives. We are asked to surrender our will and realize that what we receive in this life is exactly what He will give in order to enrich it. We are asked to be patient, knowing fully well that God loves us and that He is steadfast and gracious. He will always give us exactly what we need at the time we need it. God has already known what we will pray for even before we have said it. We just have to keep on believing and asking for His wisdom, knowing that it can only mean amazing things for us today and the rest of our lives.
