TUESDAY, 18th Week in Ordinary Time

August 8, 2017 – TUESDAY, 18th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Dominic, Priest and Religious Founder

Memorial, White

Nm 12: 1- 13 / Mt 15: 1- 2, 10 -14

St. Dominic (1170 - 1221), from Spain, founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1216.

FROM THE FIRST READING:         Nm 12: 6- 11, 13

Yahweh said, "Listen carefully to what I say, If there is a prophet among you, I reveal myself to him in a vision and I speak to him in a dream. It is not so for my servant, Moses, my trusted steward in all my household. To him I speak face to face, openly and not in riddles, and he sees the presence of Yahweh. Why then did you not fear to speak against my servant, against Moses?"

Yahweh became angry with them and he departed. The cloud moved away from above the Tent and Miriam was there white as snow with leprosy. Aaron turned towards Miriam and he saw that she was leprous. And he said to Moses, "My lord, I beg you, do not charge us with this sin that we have foolishly committed.... " Then Moses cried to Yahweh "Heal her, 0 God, I beg of you."

GOSPEL READING:           Mt 15: 1- 2, 10 -14

Then some Pharisees and teachers of the Law who had come to Jerusalem gathered around Jesus. And they said to him, "Why don't your disciples follow the tradition of the elders? In fact, they don't wash their hands before eating."

Jesus then called the people near him and said to them, "Listen and understand: what enters into the mouth does not make a person unclean; what defiles one is what comes out of his mouth."

After a while the disciples gathered around Jesus and said, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended by what you said?" Jesus answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Pay no attention to them! They are blind leading the blind. When a blind person leads another, the two will fall into a pit."

REFLECTION

In the first reading, Yahweh punishes Miriam with leprosy for speaking against Moses. This reminds us to be respectful towards our leaders. Leaders have great difficulties doing their work if their groups are hardheaded and always complaining. So let us love and support our leaders so that they will perform their responsibilities joyfully rather than in a burdensome manner.

Hopefully our leaders would not be like the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees of Jesus' time. If they teach us wrong values or teach us to go against God's will, we may have to disobey, even denounce them. Let us be supportive and at the same time watchful of our leaders.
