DAILY- HOMILY

November 11, 2017 – SATURDAY, 31ST Week in Ordinary Time

St. Martin of Tours, Bishop

Memorial, White

Rom 16: 3- 9, 16, 22- 27 / Lk 16: 9 – 15

     Born in Hungary, St. Martin (316- 397), Bishop of Tours, formerly a soldier, is popularly featured on horseback sharing his tunic with a beggar. He is the first non-martyr saint with a feast in the Western Church.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Rom 16: 22- 26

     I, Tertius, the writer of this letter, send you greetings in the Lord. Greetings from Gaius, who has given me lodging and in whose house the church meets. Greetings from Erastus, treasurer of the city, and from our brother Quartus.

     Glory be to God! He is able to give you strength, according to the Good News I proclaim, announcing Christ Jesus. Now is revealed the mysterious plan kept hidden for long ages in the past. By the will of the eternal God it is brought to light, through the prophetic books, and all nations shall believe the faith proclaimed to them.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 16: 9- 15

     Jesus said to his disciples, "And so I tell you, use filthy money to make friends for yourselves, so that when it fails, these people may welcome you into the eternal homes.

     "Whoever can be trusted in little things can also be trusted in great ones; whoever is dishonest in slight matters will also be dishonest in greater ones. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling filthy money, who could entrust you with true wealth? And if you have not been trustworthy with things which are not really yours, who will give you the wealth which is your own?

     "No servant can serve two masters. Either he does not like the one and is fond of the other, or he regards one highly and the other with contempt. You cannot give yourself to God and to Money."

     The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all of this and sneered at Jesus. He said to them, "You do your best to be considered righteous by people. But God knows the heart, and what rises high among humans is loathed by God."

     REFLECTION

We tend to be the judge of ourselves, justifying our actions and, more often than not, we acquit ourselves of any wrongdoing. But God sees beyond all things. He sees what is in our heart, what we think, and what ulterior motives we have in doing things.

     Furthermore, God does not think in the same way we do and he does not see things as we do. God judges us not on what we do in public but on what we really are before him.

     God calls us despite our being unworthy; he judges us with love and mercy. God continues to trust us and gives us chances again and again to redeem ourselves and to hopefully merit the eternal kingdom beyond this earthy world.

     We hope we choose the correct way.
