MEMORIAL, IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

JUNE 16, 2012
SATURDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
MEMORIAL, IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

1 Kgs 19:19-21 / Lk 2:41-51

1 KINGS 19:19-21
So Elijah left. He found Elisha, son of Shaphat, who was plowing a field of twelve acres and was at the end of the twelfth acre. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah and said, "Let me say goodbye to my father and mother; then I will follow you." Elijah said to him, "Return if you want, don't worry about what I did." However, Elisha turned back, took the yoke of oxen and slew them. He roasted their meat on the pieces of the yoke and gave it to his people who ate of it. After this, he followed Elijah and began ministering to him.

LUKE 2:41-51
Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover, as was customary. And when Jesus was twelve years old, he went up with them, according to the custom of this feast. After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and his parents did not know it. They thought he was in the company, and after walking the whole day they looked for him among their relatives and friends. As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem searching for him, and on the third day they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. And all the people were amazed at his understanding and his answers. His parents were very surprised when they saw him, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I were very worried while searching for you." Then he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand this answer. Jesus went down with them, returning to Nazareth, and he continued to be subject to them. As for his mother, she kept all these things in her heart.

REFLECTION
Today is the feast of the Immaculate Heart of our Blessed Virgin Mary. Our nation celebrates various feasts to honor and revere Mother Mary. On January 1, as we welcome the New Year, we celebrate Mary as the Mother of God. The month of May is dedicated to Mary, September is her birth month, October is the rosary month, and finally December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception. June 16 may not be traditionally associated with Mama Mary, but today being the Saturday following the Second Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the memorial of her Immaculate Heart.

For this, let us do something personal, beyond our natural self and meaningful for our Mother Mary – `as she treasures all this in her heart.' Blessed are we who have recourse to our Mother, in Jesus' most precious Name, we pray. AMEN!

FEAST, MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

JUNE 15, 2012
FRIDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
FEAST, MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Hos 11:1, 3-4, 8c-9 / Eph 3:8-12, 14-19 / Jn 19:31-37

HOSEA 11:1, 3-4, 8C-9
I loved Israel when he was a child; out of Egypt I called my son. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; yet little did they realize that it was I who cared for them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with leading strings of love, and I became for them as one who eases the yoke upon their neck and stoops down to feed them. How can I give you up, Ephraim? Can I abandon you like Admah or make you like Zeboiim? My heart is troubled within me and I am moved with compassion. I will not give vent to my great anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim for I am God and not human. I am the Holy One in your midst and I do not want to come to you in anger.

EPHESIANS 3:8-12, 14-19
This grace was given to me, the least among all the holy ones: to announce to the pagan nations the immeasurable riches of Christ and to make clear to all how the mystery, hidden from the beginning in God, the Creator of all things, is to be fulfilled. Even the heavenly forces and powers will now discover through the Church the wisdom of God in its manifold expression, as the plan is being fulfilled which God designed from the beginning in Christ Jesus, our Lord. In him we receive boldness and confidence to approach God. And now I kneel in the presence of the Father from whom every family in heaven and on earth has received its name. May he strengthen in you the inner self through his Spirit, according to the riches of his glory; may Christ dwell in your hearts through faith; may you be rooted and founded in love. All of this so that you may understand with all the holy ones the width, the length, the height and the depth—in a word, that you may know the love of Christ that surpasses all knowledge, that you may be filled and reach the fullness of God.

JOHN 19:31-37
As it was Preparation Day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross during the Sabbath, for this Sabbath was a very solemn day. They asked Pilate to have the legs of the condemned men broken, so that the bodies might be taken away. The soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other man, who had been crucified with Jesus. When they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they did not break his legs. One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water. The one who saw it, has testified to it, and his testimony is true; he knows he speaks the truth, so that you also might believe. All this happened to fulfill the words of Scripture: Not one of his bones shall be broken. Another text says: They shall look on him whom they have pierced.

REFLECTION
From the first reading: "Thus says the LORD: When Israel was a child I loved him…" Our parents taught us many things. They wanted us to develop our minds so that we could learn and become successful in life. But what is true success? Becoming rich, famous or knowledgeable? For God, true success is in loving a lot. So who can we say has done this, if not Jesus? He has loved us to the end and by doing so, he has ransomed us for God. He has given life and hope to us all!

In the second reading, St. Paul says that the love of Christ for men is beyond human comprehension. Yet it can be experienced when we realize that God, who is full of goodness, loves us even when we have sinned against Him. Jesus died for our sins out of love for us. Perhaps, this is something we cannot fully comprehend; but it is something we can accept with our hearts.

The more we receive this divine love in our journey as Christians, the more we will want to share it with others. Love is essentially a giving of self. Jesus has already given himself to us. So why should we despair when trials and tribulations come our way? Let us turn to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus for strength and courage. Let us endeavor to love all people as he did. Let us imitate his Most Sacred Heart.

THURSDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

JUNE 14, 2012
THURSDAY 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

1 Kgs 18:41-46 / Mt 5:20-26

1 KINGS 18:41-46
Elijah then said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for the sound of rain is rushing in." So Ahab went up to eat and drink. Elijah, in the mean time, went to the top of Carmel, bowed to the ground and put his face between his knees. Then he said to his servant, "Go up and look in the direction of the sea." The man went up, looked, and said, "There is nothing." Then Elijah said, "Go again" and seven times he went. At the seventh time, he perceived a little cloud, the size of a man's hand, rising out of the sea. Elijah told him, "Go, tell Ahab: Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you." A little later the sky grew dark with clouds and wind and a strong rain fell. Ahab was riding on his way to Jezreel; as for Elijah, the hand of Yahweh was on him, and tucking his cloak in his belt, he ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

MATTHEW 5:20-26
I tell you then, if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to our people in the past: Do not commit murder; anyone who does kill will have to face trial. But now I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister deserves to be brought before the council. Whoever calls a brother or a sister "Fool!" deserves to be thrown into the fire of hell. So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar, and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with him, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Don't forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. There you will stay, until you have paid the last penny.

REFLECTION
In the Old Testament, reprisal was an accepted practice (Mt 5:38). However, Jesus challenges us to be better followers; we must be pure not only in actions but also even in our minds and hearts. It is almost impossible to achieve this state of near perfection, but as Christians, we are called to be holy, even in the daily, mundane courses of our lives.

When we are at peace with others, we are at peace within ourselves. If there is turmoil in our relationships, everything else is affected. Bitterness and anger influence our perspectives and actions, and that is why Jesus wants us to let go of negative feelings and thoughts. He stresses the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in living healthy and full lives, worthy of being called Christians. It does not matter who is at fault because he also wants us to be humble. It is hard enough to admit when we are wrong; it's probably harder to seek reconciliation when we know we are right. But being right isn't as satisfying as being at peace, and this is a difficult but important lesson for us all to learn.
