FEAST OF THE BIRTH OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

SEPTEMBER 8, 2005
FEAST OF THE BIRTH OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
THURSDAY 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

ROMANS 8:28-30
Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those
who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he
foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son,
so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he
predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and
those he justified he also glorified.

MATTHEW 1:18-23
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary
was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found
with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a
righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce
her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be
afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the
Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a
son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from
their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said
through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a
son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."

REFLECTION
How are we as followers of Christ? Have we ever stopped and reflected
the way we have been living our lives?

Today, as we commemorate the birth of Mary, our mother, let us begin by
reflecting on her reply to God's messenger after she was told that she
would be the mother of Jesus. Her reply was "I am the handmaid of the
Lord be it done unto me according to thy word."

Romans 8:28-30 mentions, " We know that all things work for good for
those who love God, who are called according to His purpose." The
response of Mary and today's reading compliment one another. Our
Blessed Mother submitted and surrendered everything in her life to
God's hands. She was sure that everything was for a good reason because
it was in accordance to the will of God. When she gave her "fiat", she
put aside all doubts and questions. She was a true disciple of God. She
forgot who she was and instead focused on what God wanted her to
become. She experienced humiliation, shame, hurt and fear, for she is
as human as the rest of us. However, difficult as it may have been for
her, she continued to say "yes" to the
Father's will. During her moments of suffering, she kept everything in
her heart.

We need to understand and appreciate the role of the Blessed Mother in
order to have hope in our hearts that we, too, can become true
followers of Christ, in spite of all our failures and weaknesses. She
is the example of one who sincerely loves the Lord. She taught us that
there is more to life than all that the world has to offer in order for
us to attain true peace and joy. She also reminds us that we can
experience triumph from our daily crosses if we chose to do so.

Keeping the Blessed Mother as the model of our inspiration, let us
continue to be encouraged to go through each day with faith, hope and
love in our hearts.
