SATURDAY 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

JUNE 1, 2013
MEMORIAL, ST JUSTIN, MARTYR
SATURDAY 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

Sir 51:12-20 / Ps 19: 8. 9. 10. 11 / Mk 11:27-33

Sirach 51:12-20
That is why I will give you thanks and praise and bless the Name of the Lord. In my youth, before I set out on my travels, I openly sought wisdom in prayer; before the Temple I asked for her and I will pursue her to the end of my days. While she blossomed like a ripening cluster, my heart was delighted in her; my feet followed the right path, because from my youth I searched for her. As soon as I began listening to her she was given to me, and with her, much instruction. With her help I made progress and I will glorify him who gives me wisdom, for I decided to put it into practice and ardently seek what is good. I shall not regret it. My soul has struggled to possess her. I have been attentive to observe the Law, and after my faults I have stretched out my hands to heaven and lamented my ignorance of her. My love of her increased and I found her in repentance. It was through her from the beginning that I learned to possess my heart. She will not forsake me.

Mark 11:27-33
They were once again in Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests, the teachers of the Law and the elders came to him and asked, "What authority do you have to act like this? Who gave you authority to do the things you do?" Jesus said to them, "I will ask you a question, only one, and if you give me an answer, then I will tell you what authority I have to act like this. Was John's preaching and baptism a work of God, or was it merely something human? Answer me." And they kept arguing among themselves, "If we answer that it was a work of God, he will say, `Why then did you not believe him?'" But neither could they answer before the people that the baptism of John was merely something human, for everyone regarded John as a prophet. So they answered Jesus, "We don't know," and Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you what authority I have to act as I do."

REFLECTION
In many instances we read about how the chief priests, teachers of the law and elders want to get one over Jesus. They want the people to see that Jesus did not deserve to be called a great teacher, nor a prophet, nor a miracle worker. They wanted to prove him false. So, thinking that Jesus could not answer them, they post trick questions, "By what authority do you act?" They were pretty sure he could not answer this. Of course, they were wrong for Jesus threw back a question to them that they could not answer. Either way their answers would put them on the spot.

Here we see the limited mind of man. The authorities abused their knowledge and put heavy burden on people under them. Because of pride it was impossible for them to admit that Jesus spoke the truth to which they were blind.

Sometimes we too act as if we have the answers to everything in this world. Like the authorities in Jesus' time, we too fail to realize the real authority that came from heaven. We also question God with our limited understanding, dictating Him with our will.

Only in humility can we recognize Jesus' authority. God has not made it difficult for us to find out what He wants. He has given us the Scriptures to teach, guide and instruct us daily. Do we read His word every day so that we may be directed by Jesus? It is time that we give importance to His word and stand witness to Jesus' authority.

FEAST, VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

MAY 31, 2013
FEAST, VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
FRIDAY 8TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

Zep 3: 14-18a or Rom 12: 9-16 / Is 12: 2-3. 4bcd. 5-6 / Lk 1: 39-56

Zephaniah 3: 14-18a
Cry out with joy, O daughter of Zion; rejoice, O people of Israel! Sing joyfully with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! Yahweh has lifted your sentence and has driven your enemies away. Yahweh, the king of Israel is with you; do not fear any misfortune. On that day they will say to Jerusalem: Do not be afraid nor let your hands tremble, for Yahweh your God is within you, Yahweh, saving warrior. He will jump for joy on seeing you, for he has revived his love. For you he will cry out with joy, as you do in the days of the Feast. I will drive away the evil I warned you about, and you will no longer be shamed.

Luke 1: 39-56
Mary then set out for a town in the hill country of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with holy spirit, and giving a loud cry, said, "You are most blessed among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true!" And Mary said, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name! From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever." Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned home.

REFLECTION
Today's feast commemorates the visit of Mary to her pregnant elderly cousin Elizabeth. It is also the occasion of the sanctification of John the Baptist in his mother's womb in response to Mary's greeting. Elizabeth proclaimed Mary as Mother of God, and Mary sang the "Magnificat." This feast is also recalled in the second Joyful Mystery of the rosary as the events truly emanate gladness and joy. Mary, so full of grace and inspired by the Holy Spirit, went in haste to assist Elizabeth. She brought the Messiah in her womb to the House of Zachary and transformed their lives.

As the Marian month of May draws to a close, let us thank God for the gift of Mary. In this feast, she exhibited her deep faith, her perfect love for neighbor, her charity, her humility. Like Mary, may we hasten to assist the needy and serve them with a joyful spirit as an expression of our gratitude for God's many blessings. May we fill our days with the presence of Jesus Christ so that we, too, can draw our brothers and sisters to him as Mary did. Let us always have recourse to our Blessed Mother for she is the channel through which God delights to impart to us His graces.
