SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD

MARCH 25, 2011
SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
FRIDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I

Is 7: 10-14 / Ps 40: 7-8a, 8b-9, 10, 11 / Heb 10: 4-10 / Lk 1: 26-38

ISAIAH 7: 10-14
Once again Yahweh addressed Ahaz, "Ask for a sign from Yahweh your
God, let it come either from the deepest depths or from the heights of
heaven." But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask, I will not put Yahweh to
the test." Then Isaiah said, "Now listen, descendants of David. Have
you not been satisfied trying the patience of people, that you also
try the patience of my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a
sign: The Virgin is with child and bears a son and calls his name
Immanuel.

LUKE 1:26-38
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of
Galilee called Nazareth. He was sent to a young virgin who was
betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the
virgin's name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, "Rejoice, full
of grace, the Lord is with you." Mary was troubled at these words,
wondering what this greeting could mean. But the angel said, "Do not
fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. You shall conceive and
bear a son and you shall call him Jesus." He will be great and shall
rightly be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the
kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob
forever and his reign shall have no end." Then Mary said to the angel,
"How can this be if I am a virgin?" And the angel said to her, "The
Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; therefore, the holy child to be born shall be called
Son of God. Even your relative Elizabeth is expecting a son in her old
age, although she was unable to have a child, and she is now in her
sixth month. With God nothing is impossible." Then Mary said, "I am
the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said." And
the angel left her.

REFLECTION
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Annunciation. It is a
day rich in meaning for it unites the Paschal and Christmas cycles.
Both cycles are about beginnings. Christmas is the beginning of the
life of the new Adam, Jesus Christ, born of the new Eve, Mary. That
cycle begins with the Annunciation. Easter cycle is the new beginning
for humanity, when through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, man is
raised from death of sin to a new life in the Risen Lord.

These two beginnings are closely related to the first beginning which
is the Creation. The fall of Adam and Eve came about when they
listened to the father of all lies, the devil. As a result, man
severed ties with God. Yet God promised that the Son of the Woman will
crush the head of the serpent. Eve, the mother of all those who live
awaits for the new Eve, Mary, the mother of the new creation. "One
man's offence brought condemnation on all humanity and one man's good
act brought justification and life to all humanity." (Ro. 5:18)

May our daily prayer be: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done
to me according to Your word."

THURSDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I

MARCH 24, 2011
THURSDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I

Jer 17:5-10 / Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6 / Lk 16:19-31

JEREMIAH 17:5-10
This is what Yahweh says, "Cursed is the man who trusts in human
beings and depends on a mortal for his life, while his heart is drawn
away from Yahweh! He is like a bunch of thistles in dry land, in
parched desert places, in a salt land where no one lives and who never
finds happiness. Blessed is the man who puts his trust in Yahweh and
whose confidence is in him! He is like a tree planted by the water,
sending out its roots towards the stream. He has no fear when the heat
comes, his leaves are always green; the year of drought is no problem
and he can always bear fruit. Most deceitful is the heart. What is
there within man, who can understand him? I, Yahweh, search the heart
and penetrate the mind. I reward each one according to his ways and
the fruit of his deeds.

MATTHEW 20:17-28
Jesus said to his disciples, "Once there was a rich man who dressed in
purple and fine linen and feasted every day. At his gate lay Lazarus,
a poor man covered with sores, who longed to eat just the scraps
falling from the rich man's table. Even dogs used to come and lick his
sores. It happened that the poor man died and angels carried him to
take his place with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.
From hell where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham afar
off, and with him Lazarus at rest. He called out: `Father Abraham,
have pity on me and send Lazarus with the tip of his finger dipped in
water to cool my tongue, for I suffer so much in this fire.' Abraham
replied: `My son, remember that in your lifetime you were well-off
while the lot of Lazarus was misfortune. Now he is in comfort and you
are in agony. But that is not all. Between your place and ours a great
chasm has been fixed, so that no one can cross over from here to you
or from your side to us.' The rich man implored once more: `Then I beg
you, Father Abraham, to send Lazarus to my father's house where my
five brothers live. Let him warn them so that they may not end up in
this place of torment.' Abraham replied: `They have Moses and the
prophets. Let them listen to them.' But the rich man said: `No, Father
Abraham. But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
Abraham said: `If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they
will not be convinced even if someone rises from the grave.'"

REFLECTION
The story of the rich man and Lazarus in the Gospel reading is a
reminder for us to make the right choices. The rich man chose to
occupy himself with becoming more wealthy and adding more to his
possessions, forgetting that wealth is to be shared not hoarded let
alone worshipped. With his wealth he could have changed the world to
be a better place. Giving a little or even his left over to the poor
like Lazarus would not lessen his wealth a bit, but he chose to ignore
Lazarus. The rich man clearly made the wrong choice. He forgot that he
could not have gained his wealth without God's grace.

Let us remember that everything that we have is not really ours but
God's gift which is to be shared with others. We are our brothers'
keepers. It is said that there is no better measure of your wealth
than the way you dispose of it.

The season of Lent is an invitation for us to remember that we are our
brothers' keepers. What will it take? How are we going to get the
message that the choices we make and the lifestyle we adopt will have
far-reaching consequences?
