TUESDAY 3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

JANUARY 24, 2012
MEMORIAL, SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES
TUESDAY 3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

2 Sm 6:12b-15, 17-19 / Mk 3:31-35

2 SAMUEL 6:12B-15, 17-19
The cows went straight in the direction of Bethshemesh along the way;
they went mooing and they turned neither to the right nor to the left.
Meanwhile, the chiefs of the Philistine cities followed them as far as
the border of Bethshemesh. The people of Bethshemesh were harvesting
their wheat in the valley when they saw the Ark drawing near, and they
rejoiced greatly. The cart arrived in Bethshemesh in Joshua's field
and stopped there. A big stone lay nearby, so the people split up the
wood of the cart and offered the cows over the stone as a burnt
offering to the Lord. Meanwhile, the Levites took down the Ark of
Yahweh and the box containing the golden figures, and they set these
up on the big stone. That day the people of Bethshemesh offered burnt
offerings and sacrifices to Yahweh. These are the Philistine cities
which gave golden figures of hemorrhoids as a guilt offering to
Yahweh: Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Akron. Similarly, there were
golden figures of mice corresponding in number to all the cities of
the Philistines belonging to the five leaders, counting fortified
cities and unwalled villages. The big stone beside which the people
set down the Ark of Yahweh in the field of Joshua of Bethshemesh, is a
witness to this day. Yahweh caused the death of seventy men of
Bethshemesh who had looked at the Ark of Yahweh. On seeing this, the
people mourned greatly.

MARK 3:31-35
Then his mother and his brothers came. As they stood outside, they
sent someone to call him. The crowd sitting around Jesus told him,
"Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you." He
replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking around at
those who sat there, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers.
Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me."

REFLECTION
Praising and worshipping God aloud – some of us may find this
embarrassing and disturbing especially when done openly and publicly.
But David paid tribute to God without feeling ashamed of what he was
doing. He didn't care what other people thought of him. This is how we
also should be, as Christians, and not feel shame in publicly
expressing our faith.

Giving thanks and doing God's work with joy in our hearts pleases the
Lord. It doesn't matter what other people think as long as we live in
accordance with the Lord's will. Following His commands without doubt,
strengthening our faith amid all the pressures – these are not easy.
Yet we claim to be God's sons, daughters, brothers or sisters in
Christ. Do we do the will of God?

Perhaps it is difficult to fight evil when we are confronted with
worldly pleasures and desires. As humans, we have the tendency to go
astray and give in to the temptations of the world. But Jesus in the
Gospel reminds us that whoever does the will of God is his brother,
sister and mother. The moment we commit ourselves to the Lord and
accept him as our God and Savior, we become part of his family.

MONDAY 3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

JANUARY 23, 2012
MONDAY 3RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

2 Sm 5:1-7, 10 / Mk 3:22-30

2 SAMUEL 5:1-7, 10
After they had taken the Ark of God, the Philistines carried it from
Ebenezer to Ashdod. There they brought it into the temple of Dagon and
set it up beside him. Rising up early the following day, the people
saw that Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the Ark
of Yahweh. So they picked up Dagon and put him back in his place. But
when they rose the following morning, the people saw Dagon on the
ground again, face downward before the Ark of Yahweh. His head and
hands were broken off and lay at the threshold. Only the trunk of
Dagon was left where he fell. This is why the priests of Dagon and his
worshipers do not tread on the threshold of his temple in Ashdod up to
this day. The hand of Yahweh was heavy upon the people of Ashdod.
Yahweh afflicted the people of Ashdod and its vicinity with
hemorrhoids. Seeing this, the people of Ashdod said, "Let the Ark of
the God of Israel not remain with us. His hand is heavy on us and on
Dagon, our god." So they moved the Ark of God to Ekron. But when the
Ark entered Ekron, the people there cried out, "They have brought us
the Ark of the God of Israel to slay us all."

MARK 3:22-30
Meanwhile the teachers of the Law, who had come from Jerusalem, said,
"He is in the power of Beelzebul: the chief of the demons helps him to
drive out demons." Jesus called them to him, and began teaching them
by means of stories, or parables. "How can Satan drive out Satan? If a
nation is divided by civil war, that nation cannot stand. If a family
divides itself into groups, that family will not survive. In the same
way, if Satan has risen against himself and is divided, he will not
stand; he is finished. No one can break into the house of a strong man
in order to plunder his goods, unless he first ties up the strong man.
Then indeed, he can plunder his house. Truly, I say to you, every sin
will be forgiven humankind, even insults to God, however numerous. But
whoever slanders the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven: he carries
the guilt of his sin forever." This was their sin when they said, "He
has an unclean spirit in him."

REFLECTION
To some, these are welcome thoughts and a state of being to aim for –
to have God in us always, as our guide and light, and to go through
the day filled with the Spirit, walking mindfully and with purpose.
But to others, these same wondrous thoughts give us feelings of
impatience, shame, fear, and unworthiness. Perhaps a litany of
intervening thoughts go through our heads, like: I do not have time to
sit still and pray; I have too much to do; how am I to function with
God in me; God will not abide to stay inside a sinner like me. Then we
opt to go through life's struggles on our own.

How much we allow God to be part of our lives is a personal choice.
Christ gave us the freedom to accept his love and presence; to carry
him within us, to walk in his ways. If someone gives us the keys to
the treasury room, he gives us free reign on how much treasure to take
away. Perhaps we need to stop and ponder how much of God's gifts and
blessings we consciously should decide to take with us, and how we can
allow God to work in us.

unborn.

3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

JANUARY 22, 2012
3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

Jon 3:1-5, 10 / 1 Cor 7:29-31 / Mk 1:14-20

JONAH 3:1-5, 10
The word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time: "Go to Nineveh, the
great city, and announce to them the message I give you." In obedience
to the word of Yahweh, Jonah went to Nineveh. It was a very large
city, and it took three days just to cross it. So Jonah walked a
single day's journey and began proclaiming, "Forty days more and
Nineveh will be destroyed." The people of the city believed God. They
declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put
on sackcloth. When God saw what they did and how they turned from
their evil ways, he had compassion and did not carry out the
destruction he had threatened upon them.

1 CORINTHIANS 7:29-31
I say this, brothers and sisters: time is running out, and those who
are married must live as if not married; those who weep as if not
weeping; those who are happy as if they were not happy; those buying
something as if they had not bought it, and those enjoying the present
life as if they were not enjoying it. For the order of this world is
vanishing.

MARK 1:14-20
After John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee and began preaching
the Good News of God. He said, "The time has come; the kingdom of God
is at hand. Change your ways and believe the Good News." As Jesus was
walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother
Andrew casting a net in the lake, for they were fishermen. And Jesus
said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." At
once, they abandoned their nets and followed him. Jesus went a little
farther on and saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee; they were in
their boat mending their nets. Immediately Jesus called them and they
followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired
men.

REFLECTION
The scripture tells us that Jesus was like us in all things except for
sin. Although anointed and strengthened by the Spirit, although called
by the Father as the Beloved Son, Jesus was nevertheless human. Could
he fulfill his enormous mission by himself? As St. Paul tells us in
his Letter to the Philippians, Jesus "did not deem equality with God
something to be grasped at. Rather he emptied himself and took the
form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men." [Philippians
2:6-7]

Can he do it alone? Jesus did call a number of men and women to share
with him in his mission, later selecting 12 from his many followers to
be the Apostles. Today's gospel reading is Mark's account of Jesus'
early invitation for the men to follow him.

What kind of men did he choose to call? What instructions did he give
them at this moment that would indicate to them exactly what would be
expected of them? We know that these so-called first disciples were
fishermen by trade. Other information in the Gospels lead us to
believe that at least one of them was a married man [Jesus cured
Peter's mother-in-law] and another was known to be a member of the
zealot party [a "son of thunder" – an `activist' to use today's
terminology], and at least these four apparently knew each other as
companions in their trade. We know little else, except that they
became close companions of Jesus for his mission and together with the
others of the "Twelve" they became leaders of the community that was
to become the Church. Yet they had their weaknesses. One would
eventually betray him, and the others, despite their protestations
that they would never leave him, would abandon him when he needed
their support most.

However, Jesus must have seen these men to be people who, with the
strength and empowerment of the Holy Spirit, could be his companions
for his mission. At the last supper, Jesus prayed to the Father for
these people whom he had chosen. He reminded them: "It was not you who
chose me, but I who chose you." [John 15:16] As Jesus was soon to
depart from this world, he prayed that they would be strong and
faithful enough to continue his mission. It was for that that he chose
them and very patiently tried to teach them what it really meant to be
his mission companions: "Follow me and I will make you fishers of
men."

That encounter took place so long ago, but the Lord still invites us,
as his disciples, to be his mission companions. Through the centuries,
the particular works of the mission have increased and developed. Men
and women are still being called to share in the mission of Jesus. As
we hear today's Gospel proclaimed, each one of us can hear the
invitation to be companions of Jesus and offer what we can for the
mission.

SATURDAY 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

JANUARY 21, 2012
MEMORIAL, SAINT AGNES
SATURDAY 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

2 Sm 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27 / Mk 3:20-21

2 SAMUEL 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27
There was a man from Ramathaim, in the hills of Eph raim, whose name
was Elkanah. He was son of Tohu, son of Jeroham, of the clan of Zuph.
He had two wives, Han nah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children but
Hannah had none. Every year Elkanah went to worship and to sacrifice
to Yahweh of hosts at Shiloh. The priests there were the two sons of
Eli, Hophni and Phineas. Whenever Elkanah offered sacrifice, he gave
portions to his wife, Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters, and
made this vow, "O Yahweh of hosts, if only you will have compassion on
your maidservant and give me a son, I will put him in your service for
as long as he lives and no razor shall touch his head." As she prayed
before Yahweh, Eli observed the movement of her lips. Elkanah rose
early in the morning and worshiped before Yahweh with his wives. Then
they went back home to Ramah. When Elkanah slept with his wife,
Hannah, Yahweh took compassion on her, Her husband answered, "Do what
seems best to you. Stay here until you have weaned the child and may
Yahweh confirm your vow." So Han nah stayed behind and continued to
nurse her son until he was weaned. When the child was weaned, Hannah
took him with her along with a three-year-old bull, a measure of flour
and a flask of wine, and she brought him to Yahweh's house at Shiloh.
The child was still young. After they had slain the bull, they brought
the child to Eli. Hannah exclaimed: "Oh, my lord, look! I am the woman
who was standing here in your presence, praying to Yahweh. I asked for
this child and Yahweh granted me the favor I begged of him.

MARK 3:20-21
They went home. The crowd began to gather again and they couldn't even
have a meal. Knowing what was happening, his relatives came to take
charge of him. "He is out of his mind," they said.

REFLECTION
"He is out of his mind." Indeed he is. Out of his mind for loving us
in an extremely radical way, beyond our understanding, beyond our
expectations. This is all gift. We really do not deserve to be loved
the way Jesus loves us. We can only return to him with gratitude and
reverence in our hearts. As we quiet down before our loving God, we
ask ourselves, "Where Can We Find . . . ?"

Lord, as we come before You, You know what is in our heart.

Before we could ask for forgiveness, You have already forgiven us.
Before we could love You, You have loved us first and continue to do
so.
Before we could touch You, You have touched us first.
Before we could reach You, You have reached out to us.
Before we could ask and beg, You have given.

Where can we find a God who is more forgiving than You are.
Where can we find a God who is more loving than You are.
Where can we find a God who is more generous than You are.
Where can we find a God who is more patient than You are.

Lord, You are the greatest and You have done great things for us. You
are our Creator. Our Glory, our King and our God. Amen.
