TUESDAY, 3rd Week in Ordinary Time
January 23, 2018 – TUESDAY, 3rd Week in Ordinary Time
2 Sm 6: 12b- 15, 17- 19 / Mk 3: 31- 35
FROM THE 1ST READING: 2 Sm 6: 17- 19
They brought in the ark of Yahweh and laid it in its place in the tent which David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt and peace offerings before Yahweh. Once the offerings had been made, David blessed the people in the name of Yahweh of hosts, and distributed to each of them, to each man and woman in the entire assembly of Israel, a loaf of bread, a portion of meat and a raisin cake. With this, all the people left for their homes.
GOSPEL READING: Mk 3: 31 - 35
Then his mother and his brothers came. As they stood outside, they sent someone to call him. The crowd sitting around Jesus told him, "Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you." He replied," Who are my mother and my brothers?"
And looking around at those who sat there he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me."
In the first reading King David leads his people in celebrating the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem.
In the Gospel reading Jesus teaches us who are his "family," who are "brother and sister and mother to him [me]."
Before I joined an active Christian community I was a lone Christian: I attended Sunday Mass, rarely went to confession and received Holy Communion but did my own thing, trying to be a "good" person so that I will not end up in hell..
Then my wife and I were invited to attend a Christian Life Program in the parish and then asked to join a living Christian community in the parish. Amazing how my outlook in life changed.
I enjoyed the companionship and various activities in the Christian community and gradually began to get to know Jesus more and have a deeper personal relationship with him. Then I realized I was not alone but had brothers and sisters in Christ. I became "related" to Jesus serving him with my time, talent and treasure and by knowing and following God's will for me.
When Jesus points to his disciples and says, "Here are my mother and my brothers," are you among them or somewhere else?
