SATURDAY, 12th Week in Ordinary Time

Lam 2: 2, 10 - 14. 18 - 19 I Mt 8: 5 – 17

Many early Christians in Rome gave their lives for the Faith under Emperor Nero about 64 AD.

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Mt 8: 5- 13

When Jesus entered Capernaum, an army captain approached him to ask his help, "Sir, my servant lies sick at home. He is paralyzed and suffers terribly." Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

The captain answered, "I am not worthy to have you under my roof. Just give an order and my boy will be healed. For I myself, a junior officer, give orders to my soldiers. And I say to one, 'Go,' he goes, and if I say to another, 'Come,' he comes, and to my servant: 'Do this,' he does it."

When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those who were following him, "I tell you, I have not found such faith in Israel. I say to you, many will come from east and west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven, but the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness; there they will wail and grind their teeth."

Then Jesus said to the captain, "Go home now. As you believed, so let it be." And at that moment his servant was healed.

REFLECTION

Today's Gospel reading delves on the power of faith. In all the healing

miracles of Jesus we see the act of total trust and surrender of those in need in the mercy and power of God. This type of faith is itself a gift of God.

The army captain professes his faith and unworthiness before the admired miracle-worker Jesus: "I am not worthy to have you under my roof. Just give an order and my boy will be healed.." Jesus praises the faith of the centurion, a non-Jew.

The Church has memorialized the army captain's faith by using his proclamation at each Mass before we receive the Lord Jesus in Holy Communion, "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." May our proclamation of faith in the Lord's healing power be as sincere and genuine as that of the army captain.

In the cure of the army captain's young servant Jesus showed his compassion for those who are sick and who suffer: "My servant lies sick at home. He is paralyzed and suffers terribly." Though we may not be able to cure illnesses the way Jesus did, let us show care and compassion for the sick and troubled we know..

Faith and prayer go together. May God strengthen our faith in him and in his love and care for us. And may we not hesitate to approach him for our needs.
