EASTER TUESDAY – YEAR I

APRIL 26, 2011
EASTER TUESDAY – YEAR I

Acts 2:36-41 / Ps 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22 / Jn 20:11-18

ACTS 2:36-41
Let Israel then know for sure that God has made Lord and Christ this
Jesus whom you crucified." When they heard this, they were deeply
troubled. And they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What shall we
do, brothers?" Peter answered: "Each of you must repent and be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be
forgiven. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the
prom ise of God was made to you and your children, and to all those
from afar whom our God may call." With many other words Peter gave the
message and appealed to them saying, "Save yourselves from this
crooked generation." So those who accepted his word were baptized;
some three thousand persons were added to their number that day.

JOHN 20:11-18
Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she bent down to
look inside; she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of
Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said,
"Woman, why are you weeping?" She answered, "Because they have taken
my Lord and I don't know where they have put him." As she said this,
she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not
recognize him. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are
you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and answered him,
"Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and
I will go and remove him." Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and
said to him, "Rabboni"—which means, Master. Jesus said to her, "Do not
cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to
my brothers and say to them: I am ascending to my Father, who is your
Father, to my God, who is your God." So Mary of Magdala went and
announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord, and this is what he
said to me."

REFLECTION
The beautiful thing is that even though Jesus is both Lord and
Messiah, we have to understand that He has not done the work of the
Messiah until He is crucified and risen from the dead. He was indeed
the Messiah, as He stood there day after day preaching in the temple
and in the area of Judea and Galilee.

Yet because He had not done the work, none of the people who heard his
preaching were able yet to be saved. No one was saved by the preaching
of the Lord. None of the disciples were. They did not even understand
it. But when the Holy Spirit descended upon them, then suddenly
everything that he had said to them made sense. And what made sense
more than anything else was that Jesus had to go to Jerusalem to
suffer, to die, and then rise again on the third day. Had He not done
that, none of us could be saved.

These people, on the other hand, who heard Peter, heard his preaching
and they believed. They believed what he had said and therefore they
were baptized.

We need to ask the same question as these people when they heard Peter
speak: "What are we to do?" We have already been baptized. So that is
not the problem. But it is the other part: simply to believe that God
has made both Lord and Messiah this Jesus whom we crucified.

FEAST, ST. MARK, EVANGELIST

APRIL 25, 2011
FEAST, ST. MARK, EVANGELIST
EASTER MONDAY – YEAR I

1 Pt 5:5-14 / Ps 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17 / Mk 16:15-20

1 PETER 5:5-14
In the same way, let the younger ones among you respect the authority
of the elders. All of you must clothe yourself with humility in your
dealings with one another, because God opposes the proud but gives his
grace to the humble. Bow down, then, before the power of God so that
he will raise you up at the appointed time. Place all your worries on
him since he takes care of you. Be sober and alert because your enemy
the devil prowls about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.
Stand your ground, firm in your faith, knowing that our brothers and
sisters, scattered throughout the world, are confronting similar
sufferings. God, the giver of all grace, has called you to share in
Christ's eternal Glory and after you have suffered a little he will
bring you to perfection: he will confirm, strengthen and establish you
forever. Glory be to him forever and ever. Amen. I have had these few
lines of encouragement written to you by Silvanus, our brother, whom I
know to be trustworthy. For I wanted to remind you of the kindness of
God really present in all this. Hold on to it. Greetings from the
community in Babylon, gathered by God, and from my son, Mark. Greet
one another with a friendly embrace. Peace to you all who are in
Christ.

MATTHEW 16:15-20
And he said to them, `Go out to the whole world; proclaim the gospel
to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved;
whoever does not believe will be condemned. These are the signs that
will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out
devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes
in their hands and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they
will lay their hands on the sick, who will recover.' And so the Lord
Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven; there at
the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out,
preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the
word by the signs that accompanied it.

REFLECTION
When a person needs to leave home on a very long trip, he gives
special instructions to his loved ones he will be leaving behind on
what he wishes them to do regarding matters of great importance.

Immediately before Jesus ascended to heaven, he gathered his disciples
and gave them final instructions on matters of utmost importance to
him: "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole
creation." Jesus promised special powers to those who will believe and
be baptized, including the power to "lay their hands on the sick, and
they will recover." The disciples believed in Jesus, and they went
through all the world preaching the gospel, casting out demons,
healing the sick and spreading Christianity. The Son of God became man
and lived among us, endured great suffering, including the horrible
death on the cross, in order to bring to mankind the Good News of
God's love for us. He took great pains to make his disciples know
about this so that they themselves would spread the Good News to all
mankind. During his entire public life, Jesus did not go beyond what
we now know as Israel and its surrounding areas to preach the Gospel.
He trusted his disciples to be the ones to go to the whole world and
preach the Gospel to all creation.

What about us modern-day disciples of Christ? Do we truly believe in
Jesus, enough to obey his instructions to preach the gospel to all
creation? Do we believe Jesus enough to have faith in his promise that
he will help us perform this assignment with the wonderful signs he
gives to those who believe? Do we love God enough to want to let the
whole creation know about the Good News of his love for us?

PRAYER REQUESTS
We pray …
… for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the
unborn.
… for the speedy recovery and healing of Wendy
… for the personal intentions of: Dali Sotelo and her husband
… for the eternal repose of the souls of
- Catalina S. de Leon
- Vern Burdick
Eternal rest grant unto them and may perpetual light shine upon them.
May they and all the dearly departed rest in peace.

- In Memoriam (+): Jovito Yu (Feb 15,1948-Apr 25, 2003)+
… for world peace and reconciliation.

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers
and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
