Friday 21st Week in Ordinary Time

August 31, 2007
Friday 21st Week in Ordinary Time - Year I

1 THESSALONIANS 4:1-8
Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please
God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the
Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we
gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God's will that you
should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that
each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy
and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not
know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or
take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as
we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be
impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this
instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy
Spirit.

MATTHEW 25:1-13
"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took
their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were
foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did
not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along
with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they
all became drowsy and fell asleep. "At midnight the cry rang out:
`Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' "Then all the virgins
woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise,
`Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' "`No,' they
replied, `there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to
those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' "But while they were
on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who
were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was
shut. "Later the others also came. `Sir! Sir!' they said. `Open the
door for us!' "But he replied, `I tell you the truth, I don't know
you.' "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the
hour.

REFLECTION
To stay awake does not mean simply not to fall asleep. It means rather
to foresee, to be attentive to the least sign of an arrival, to keep
hope alive.

God will never grow weary of awakening his Church. God maintains the
Church in this world that it may be a sign, a sign that supports hope.
And that means that the night is not endless. Do not let the time slip
away or get wound up in itself. History is leading to a completion.
Church's vocation is to keep lit the lamp that is set on a stand to
light the human house with its rays.

If we are always ready to go and be with Jesus, then we are ready to
stay. If we are ready to stay and meet the challenge of this world by
living the Gospel without compromise, then we are ready to go. Would
we really want Jesus to come back, only to find us not really burning
brightly in the fire of love that comes from the Holy Spirit of God?
We must actually fill our lamps with oil through zealous prayer, so
that the fire of our life with Christ might burn brightly and shine
divine light into the darkness of this world. Then we will be ever
ready to gaze upon the face of Christ when he comes again.
