TUESDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

OCTOBER 18, 2011
FEAST, ST. LUKE, EVANGELIST
TUESDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

2 Tm 4:9-17 / Ps 145:10-11, 12-13, 17-18 / Lk 10:1-9

2 TIMOTHY 4:9-17
Do your best to come to me quickly. You must know that Demas has
deserted me for the love of this world: he returned to Thessalonica.
Crescens has gone to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke remains
with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is a useful helper in
my work. I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. Bring with you the cloak I left
at Troas, in Carpos' house and also the scrolls, especially the
parchments. Alexander the metalworker has caused me great harm. The
Lord will repay him for what he has done. Distrust him for he has been
very much opposed to our preaching. At my first hearing in court no
one supported me; all deserted me. May the Lord not hold it against
them. But the Lord was at my side, giving me strength to proclaim the
Word fully, and let all the pagans hear it. So I was rescued from the
lion's mouth.

LUKE 10:1-9
Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two
ahead of him to every town and place, where he himself was to go. And
he said to them, "The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. So you
must ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers to his harvest.
Courage! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Set off without
purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you
know." "Whatever house you enter, first bless them saying: `Peace to
this house.' If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest
upon that person. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in
that house eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves
to be paid. Do not move from house to house." "When they welcome you
in any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there and
say to them: `The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.'"

REFLECTION
Today we rejoice and honor St. Luke, a faithful instrument in the
hands of the Holy Spirit, moved by the grace of divine inspiration, to
bring to us a remarkable Gospel as well as the history of early
Christianity in the Acts of the Apostles. In his unique writings we
encounter details of the birth and childhood of Jesus, probably as
related to him by the Blessed Mother herself. Eusebius called him the
"painter of the Virgin" because his writings inspired many art works
which attributed purity, blessedness and docility to her. His gospel
engages us in many unique details which describe the divine mercy of
Jesus, the strong role of women in society and the glory of Christ's
resurrection as revealed on the road to Emmaus. We draw inspiration
from the apostolic fervor of the first Christians in the Acts of the
Apostles, also known as the Gospel of the Holy Spirit. All of these we
are thankful for, because through the faithful work of St Luke, we not
only have an accurate historical account of events that happened
millenniums ago, but a meaningful experience we enjoy as we read the
scriptures daily.

MONDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

OCTOBER 17, 2011
MEMORIAL, ST IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH, BISHOP & MARTYR
MONDAY 29TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Rom 4:20-25 / Lk 1:69-70, 71-72, 73-75 / Lk 12:13-21

ROMANS 4:20-25
He did not doubt nor did he distrust the promise of God, and by being
strong in faith, he gave glory to God: he was convinced that He who
had given the promise had power to fulfill it. This was taken into
account for him to attain righteousness. This was taken into account:
these words of Scripture are not only for him, but for us, too,
because we believe in Him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from among the
dead, he who was delivered for our sins and raised to life for us to
receive true righteousness.

LUKE 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd spoke to Jesus, "Master, tell my brother to share
with me the family inheritance." He replied, "My friend, who has
appointed me as your judge or your attorney?" Then Jesus said to the
people, "Be on your guard and avoid every kind of greed, for even
though you have many possessions, it is not that which gives you
life." And Jesus continued with this story, "There was a rich man and
his land had produced a good harvest. He thought: `What shall I do?
For I am short of room to store my harvest.' So this is what he
planned: `I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones to store all
this grain, which is my wealth. Then I may say to myself: My friend,
you have a lot of good things put by for many years. Rest, eat, drink
and enjoy yourself.' But God said to him: `You fool! This very night
your life will be taken from you; tell me who shall get all you have
put aside?' This is the lot of the one who stores up riches instead of
amassing for God."

REFLECTION
Today's first reading and Gospel carry beautiful messages which can
serve as guides to Christian living. The first reading reminds us that
we can expect to receive God's promise so long as we remain faithful
to Him. The story of Abraham is one of total surrender and trust. His
was a life singularly dedicated to God. We struggle to learn to trust
the Lord daily which is why it is so inspiring to find Abraham who
followed God without question even though he couldn't understand
completely. I remember what a priest once said: that the biggest
insult we can give our Lord is to be anxious and not to trust Him. For
if we really believe that our God is a God who loves us and cares for
us dearly, how then can we not entrust ourselves to him completely?

The Gospel reminds us to be watchful so that we live our lives
according to God's standards. Quite often, we find ourselves so
entrenched in the world that we forget how everything in the world is
temporary. Almost immediately, if we consider this view of our world
as temporary, our perspective regarding money, success and achievement
to name a few, changes. At day's end, we recognize that our true home
is not of this world but with our God in heaven. Knowing this, it
makes sense for us to be mindful that our thoughts, words and actions
more often that not, bring us closer to God. May we all find ourselves
living according to God's standard of a rich life.

Lord, teach us to trust you and live our lives in a manner pleasing to
your sight.
