MEMORIAL, THE BEHEADING OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST, MARTYR

AUGUST 29, 2013
MEMORIAL, THE BEHEADING OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST, MARTYR
THURSDAY 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

1 Thes 3:7-13 / Ps 90: 3-5a. 12-13. 14 and 17 / Mt 24:42-51

READINGS
1 Thessalonians 3:7-13
What a consolation for us, brothers and sisters, in the midst of our troubles and trials, this faith of yours! It is a breath of life for us when you stand firm in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for all the joy that we feel before God be- cause of you? Day and night we beg of him to let us see you again, that we may complete the instruction of the believers. May God our Father and Jesus our Lord prepare the way for us to visit you. May the Lord increase more and more your love for each other and for all people, as he in - creases our love for you. May he strengthen you internally to be holy and blameless before God, our Father, on the day that Jesus, our Lord, will come with all his saints.

Matthew 24:42-51
Stay awake then, for you do not know on what day your Lord will come. Obviously, if the owner of the house knew at what time the thief was coming, he would certainly stay up and not allow his house to be broken into. So be alert, for the Son of Man will come at the hour you least expect. Imagine a capable servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time. Fortunate indeed is that servant, whom his master will find at work when he comes. Truly I say to you, his lord will entrust that one with everything he has. Not so with the bad servant, who thinks, `My master is delayed.' And he begins to ill-treat his fellow servants, while eating and drinking with drunkards. But his master will come on the day he does not know, and at the hour he least expects. He will dismiss that servant, and deal with him as with the hypocrites. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

REFLECTION
Today let us celebrate with tender, loving devotion the feast of the martyrdom of the cousin of Our Lord – John the Baptist. John was the forerunner of Jesus. He was the one tasked by God to prepare the way of the Lord. The gospel says that he was a just and holy man. Because he had to speak against evil in high places, against the King, he was imprisoned, suffered, and finally beheaded. He died a horrible death on orders from the king

Like St. John the Baptist, let us prepare the way of the Lord. Let us clear, sweep, wash, denounce, evil starting from our hearts. Let us give all to do God's work without fear for God is with us. At all times, let us look at Our Lord for courage and strength. He is very near us. He is in us. Let us act courageously, without negligence, nor hesitation; like a faithful servant, like a soldier in the army of our God, without guile, willingly, not reasoning, not justifying; with loving obedience, giving hands, heart, head to our God. Let us do what God requires of us and leave the rest in His Hands.

Take and receive, O Lord, my body, my mind, my will, my liberty. All things I have and own are yours. They belong to you. Let me use them to prepare a way for you.

WEDNESDAY 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

AUGUST 28, 2013
MEMORIAL, SAINT AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
WEDNESDAY 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

1 Thes 2:9-13 / Ps 139: 7-8. 9-10. 11-12ab / Mt 23:27-32

READINGS
1 Thessalonians 2:9-13
Remember our labor and toil; when we preached the Gospel, we worked day and night so as not to be a burden to you. You are witnesses with God that we were holy, just and blameless toward all of you who now believe. We warned each of you as a father warns his children; we encouraged you and urged you to adopt a way of life worthy of God who calls you to share his own glory and kingdom. This is why we never cease giving thanks to God for, on receiving our message, you accepted it, not as human teaching, but as the word of God. That is what it really is, and as such it is at work in you who believe.

Matthew 23:27-32
Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, beautiful in appearance, but inside there are only dead bones and uncleanness. In the same way, you appear religious to others, but you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness within. Woe to you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets, and decorate the monuments of the righteous. You say: Had we lived in the time of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the blood of the prophets. So, you yourselves confess to be the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. And now, finish off what your ancestors began!

REFLECTION
Today is the feast day of St. Augustine, bishop and doctor of the Church. St. Augustine was born in Tagaste in Africa. He received a Christian education, although he was not baptized until he was 33 years of age. He was ordained priest at 37 and became bishop of Hippo at 42. He was a great spiritual writer and pastor. For 34 years he guided his flock, instructing them with sermons and many writings. He fought bravely against the errors of his time and explained the faith carefully and cogently. He died at age 76.

Even though Augustine lived from 354-430 A.D., his writings continue to guide us. Christians nowadays are thirsty for serious religious teachings because there are so many pagan influences in our lives now. Some priests do not seriously teach God's Word. Their sermons and homilies are intended just to entertain or amuse the people. But what we need is solid doctrine because that will counteract all the false teachings we receive from family, society and sometimes, the government. The writings and teachings of the Fathers of the Church, including St. Augustine, are a treasure that we must receive from Church leaders. God's Word must be seriously and cogently explained to us so we can discern gospel truth from human falsehoods.
