SATURDAY, 31ST Week in Ordinary Time

November 4, 2017 – SATURDAY, 31ST Week in Ordinary Time
St. Charles Borromeo, Bishop
Memorial, White

Rom 11: 1- 2a, 11-12, 25-29 / Lk 14: 1, 7-11

St. Charles Borromeo (1538 - 1584) became Cardinal-Archbishop of Milan and was among the key reformers of the Council of Trent. At the age of 22, he became a Cardinal and Secretary of State of his uncle, Pope Pius IV. He set up diocesan seminaries for the training of priests.

From the GOSPEL READING:  Lk 14: 7- 11
Jesus then told a parable to the guests, for he had noticed how they tried to take places of honor. And he said, "When you are invited to a wedding party, do not choose the best seat. It may happen that someone more important than you has been invited, and your host, who invited both of you, will come and say to you, 'Please give this person your place.' What shame is yours when you take the lowest seat! "Whenever you are invited, go rather to the lowest seat, so that your host may come and say to you, 'Friend, you must come up higher.' And this will be a great honor for you in the presence of all the other guests. For whoever makes himself out to be great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be raised."

REFLECTION
When success comes we rejoice! We become proud and think highly of ourselves. We may think we are above others, greater, wiser, and more competent. Little by
little, we depend more on our great selves, and less and less on God.
But, though we may be successful, we start to feel emptiness and things seem meaningless.

Life built with God is life built on solid foundation. God is the giver of life and the source of all good things. When we depend on God, humble enough to offer him our weaknesses and brave enough to acknowledge that God is the one truly at work, God will never disappoint us. He will enable us to do things we cannot even imagine ourselves doing, bring us to places we have never thought of going to, and he will let us conquer many battles and hardships. And he will bless us with things much more than we ourselves deserve. All glory unto God!
