SATURDAY 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

NOVEMBER 19, 2011
SATURDAY 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

1 Mc 6:1-13 / Ps 9:2-3, 4, 6, 16, 19 / Lk 20:27-40

1 MACCABEES 6:1–13*
While King Anthiocus was still in Persia, it was reported to him that
the armies sent to Judea had been defeated. They told him that
although Lysias had gone with a strong army, he had to flee before the
Jews who had been strengthened with the weapons and the abundant booty
taken from the neighboring armies. When he received this news, he was
terrified and deeply upset. So he remained overcome by this terrible
anguish for many days. He felt that he was dying, so he called his
friends and said to them, "Sleep has fled from my eyes and I am
greatly crushed by my anxieties. Now I remember the evils I did in
Jerusalem, the vessels of gold and silver that I stole, the
inhabitants of Judea I ordered to be killed for no reason at all. I
now know that because of this, these misfortunes have come upon me,
and I am dying of grief in a strange land."

LUKE 20:27-40
Some Sadducees arrived. These people claim that there is no
resurrection and they asked Jesus this question, "Master, in the
Scripture Moses told us: `If anyone dies leaving a wife but no
children, his brother must take the wife, and the child to be born
will be regarded as the child of the deceased man.' Now, there were
seven brothers; the first married a wife, but he died without
children; and the second and the third took the wife; in fact all
seven died leaving no children. Last of all the woman died. On the day
of the resurrection, to which of them will the woman be wife? For the
seven had her as wife." And Jesus replied, "Taking husband or wife is
proper to people of this world, but for those who are considered
worthy of the world to come and of resurrection from the dead, there
is no more marriage. Besides, they cannot die for they are like the
angels. They too are sons and daughters of God because they are born
of the resurrection. Yes, the dead will be raised, and even Moses
implied it in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the
Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. For he
is God of the living and not of the dead, and for him all are alive."

REFLECTION
Today's passage talks about the Sadducees questioning Jesus on the
topic of the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees try to disprove
and find fault in this teaching by bringing up the rule of Moses on
marriage and how a widow is passed down to another brother of the
husband in order to bear a son and an heir. All of this questioning
was due to the fact that the Sadducees did not believe in the
resurrection. This explains why they misinterpret the Law of God.
Also, the Sadducees were trying to put Jesus to a test hoping that
Jesus would err. They did not believe Jesus and took Jesus as a threat
to the power and high status they were already enjoying.

Are we any different from the Sadducees? Death is something
inevitable. God is God of the living. To share His life is to live a
holy life in His image and likeness. People these days are so
encumbered with the worldly attachments that they fail to enrich their
spirituality that will reunite them with the Eternal God and share in
His eternity. Resurrection is something we believe in firmly in our
faith. However, entering the kingdom of God depends on how we live our
lives. We must live like children of God and be true Christians. This,
can only be achieved by action and good work. Faith is only one step
to resurrection. Action encompasses the other step.

FRIDAY 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

NOVEMBER 18, 2011
DEDICATION OF THE BASILICAS OF STS. PETER AND PAUL
FRIDAY 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

1 Mc 4:36-37, 52-59 / 1 Chr 29:10, 11, 11-12, 12 / Lk 19:45-48

1 MACCABEES 4:36–37, 52–59
Then Judas and his brothers said: "Our enemies are defeated, so let us
go up and purify the Holy Place and consecrate it again." And all the
army assembled and went up to Mount Zion. On the twenty-fifth day of
the month of Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-eight (164
B.C.) they arose at dawn and offered the sacrifice prescribed by the
Law on the new altar of holocausts which they had built. It was
precisely at that same time and date that the pagans had profaned it
before; but now they consecrated it with songs accompanied by zithers,
harps and cymbals. All the people fell prostrate and blessed Heaven
that had given them happiness and success. They celebrated the
consecration of the altar for eight days, joyfully offering holocausts
and celebrating sacrifices of thanksgiving and praise. The front of
the temple was adorned with crowns of gold and shields; the gates and
the rooms had been restored and fitted with doors. There was no end to
the celebration among the people, and so the profanation of the temple
by the pagans was forgotten. Finally, Judas, his brothers and the
whole assembly of Israel agreed to celebrate the anniversary of the
consecration of the altar annually for eight days, from the twenty-
fifth of the month of Chislev, in high festivity.

LUKE 19:45-48
Jesus entered the Temple area and began to drive out the merchants.
And he said to them, "God says in the Scriptures: My house shall be a
house of prayer: but you have turned it into a den of robbers." Jesus
was teaching every day in the Temple. The chief priests and teachers
of the Law wanted to kill him and the elders of the Jews as well, but
they were unable to do anything, for all the people were listening to
him and hanging on his words.

REFLECTION
In the first reading, Judas Maccabaeus, leader of the Israelite army,
discovers the Temple of Jerusalem to have been desecrated by the
heathens. So he selects blameless priests to purify the sanctuary and
rededicate the Temple to Yahweh. Once this was done, the whole of
Israel rejoiced greatly. This is the origin of the Christian custom to
dedicate churches and basilicas to God because for us, they are the
houses of God. Today is the memorial of the dedication of the
basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul in Rome.

What does this mean for us? Firstly, we are the temple of God. But we
have often desecrated ourselves by going after false gods – money,
career, success, fame, beauty, sex, vices, etc. We have polluted our
own persons and sickened ourselves by what we have done. So at this
juncture, we are invited to repent for our sins and make amends. Then
the Holy Trinity can come once again to dwell in us. And so everybody
will rejoice when they see that we have rededicated our lives to God.

God cannot dwell in us unless we purify ourselves of our sins with the
help of Mother Church – by frequenting the sacraments, by
communicating with fellow Christians and of course, by a lot of prayer
and self-denial.
