MONDAY, 5th Week of Easter

May 15, 2017 – MONDAY, 5th Week of Easter

St. Isidore, Farmer

Memorial, White

Acts 14:5 - 18 / Jn 14: 21 - 26

St. Isidore (1070 - 1130), patron of farmers, was a Spanish laborer near Madrid. His wife, Maria de Ia Cabeza, is also a saint.

FROM THE 1ST READING:     Acts 14: 8- 10

There was a crippled man in Lystra who had never been able to stand or walk. One day, as he was listening to the preaching, Paul looked intently at him and saw that he had the faith to be saved. So he spoke to him in a loud voice, "In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I command you to stand up on your feet." And the man stood up and began to walk around.

GOSPEL READING:           Jn 14: 21 - 26

Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever keeps my commandments is the one who loves me. If he loves me, he will also be loved by my Father in heaven; I too shall love him and show myself clearly to him."

Judas- not the lscariot- asked Jesus, "Lord, how can it be that you will show yourself clearly to us and not to the world?" Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word and my Father will love him; and we will come to him and make a room in his home. But if anyone does not love me, he will not keep my words, and these words that you hear are not mine but the Father's who sent me.

"I told you all this while I was still with you. From now on the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have told you."

REFLECTION

How do we know that there is a God? That he is living? How can we prove that we are worshipping the true God? There are some false prophets who have spoken falsely in God's name. In his teachings, Jesus has told us that we are following the true God if we have love.

Love connects us to Christ who is one with the Father. It is through love that people will know we are the disciples of Jesus. We can be good people, generous and helpful, but without love of God, this goodness is all for show. The love that comes from God has no conditions; freely given, it expects nothing in return.

The Gospel reading today tells us to show our love for God by following his commandments, listening to his word and keeping them.

With love for God, we will be able to love our neighbor freely and without any conditions, and joyfully. Divine love is this, to share in the limitless love of the Trinity.

5th SUNDAY OF EASTER

May 14, 2017 - 5th SUNDAY OF EASTER
White

Acts 6: 1 - 7 / 1 Pt 2: 4- 9 / Jn 14: 1 - 12

FROM THE 2ND READING:     1 Pt 2: 4- 6
He is the living stone rejected by people but chosen by God and precious to him. On drawing close to him, you also became living stones built into a spiritual temple, a holy community of priests offering spiritual sacrifices which please God through Jesus Christ. Scripture says: See, flay in Zion a chosen and precious cornerstone; whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.

GOSPEL READING:     Jn 14: 1 - 12
Jesus said to his disciples, "Do not be troubled; trust in God and trust in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms. Otherwise I would not have told you that I go to prepare a place for you. After I have gone and prepared a place for you, I shall come again and take you to me, so that where I am you also may be. Yet you know the way where I am going."

Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going; how can we know the way?" Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me. If you know me, you will know the Father also; indeed you know him and you have seen him."

Philip asked him, "Lord, show us the Father and that is enough." Jesus said to him, "What! I have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say: 'Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

"All that I say to you I do not say of myself. The Father who dwells in me is doing his own work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and that Father is in me; at least believe it on the evidence of these works that I do.

"Truly, I say to you, the one who believes in me will do the same work that I
do; and he will even do greater than these, for I am going to the Father."

REFLECTION
To have a good relationship with our heavenly Father is a fortune and a joy: we can easily communicate with him; we can be assured of his love for us and in return we show our love for him.

The Lord Jesus had a unique relationship with the Father because he and the Father are one, "Whoever sees me sees the Father" for "I am in the Father and the Father is in me."

In revealing this unique relationship Jesus also tells us that he is the way to the Father, the embodiment of the truth and the fount of all goodness, ""I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me."

Jesus assures his disciples and all of us that we are meant for and can hope for eternal life with the Father, "Trust in God and trust in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms. Otherwise I would not have told you that I go to prepare a place for you."

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

     KATHERYN FELICIANO

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!

SATURDAY, 4th Week of Easter

May 13, 2017 – SATURDAY, 4th Week of Easter
Our Lady of Fatima
White

Acts 13: 44- 52 / Jn 14: 7- 14

The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared several times to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, to Lucia Santos (1908- 2005), Bl. Jacinta Marto (1910 - 1920) and her brother Bl. Francisco Marto (1908- 1919).

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Jn 14: 8- lOa, 11
Philip asked Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and that is enough." Jesus said to him, "What! I have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say: 'Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? ...

"Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; at least believe it on the evidence of these works that I do."

REFLECTION
In today's Gospel reading Philip makes a request to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and that is enough." To this Jesus replies, "What! I have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say: 'Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?" This exchange shows us Jesus' disappointment with Philip, one of the chosen Twelve. Jesus was disappointed that, despite all the time Philip had spent with Jesus, Philip did not really know who he truly was.

How about us? Do we really know Jesus? How much do we know him? Many of us will probably say that we are just like Philip: we are or try to be followers of Jesus; we attend Mass regularly, we read the Bible and study his teachings. But despite all this, how much do we really know Jesus?

We ask, how do we know him? What prevents us from knowing him better or more intimately? The usual answer is our narrow-mindedness. We tend to put our knowledge of Jesus in a box of our own creation: we tell ourselves who Jesus is. The problem is that, oftentimes we get stuck in our own box, and are prevented from knowing Jesus more fully.

As seen in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the early Church faced such narrow-mindedness among many: Was the Good News of Jesus for Jews only? Or for all peoples? Paul and Barnabas were chosen to bring the Good News to the pagan nations.

Are we guilty of similar narrow-mindedness? Have we put our knowledge of Jesus in a box? Have we put limits on who he is for us?

We ask the Lord to give us open minds. May we be able to look beyond who we think Jesus is and venture into knowing who he truly is.

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

BIRTHDAY
     CYNTHIA C. INOCENCIO
     MAY ANN S. BERCES
     ROD VILLAHERMOSA

IN MEMORIAM (†)
     SUN HUAY SONG (SEPT. 30, 1919 ·MAY 13, 1981)
     SR. SOCORRO GUMNAD,MIC

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
