SATURDAY, 4th Week of Easter

May 13, 2017 – SATURDAY, 4th Week of Easter
Our Lady of Fatima
White

Acts 13: 44- 52 / Jn 14: 7- 14

The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared several times to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, to Lucia Santos (1908- 2005), Bl. Jacinta Marto (1910 - 1920) and her brother Bl. Francisco Marto (1908- 1919).

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Jn 14: 8- lOa, 11
Philip asked Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and that is enough." Jesus said to him, "What! I have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say: 'Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? ...

"Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; at least believe it on the evidence of these works that I do."

REFLECTION
In today's Gospel reading Philip makes a request to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and that is enough." To this Jesus replies, "What! I have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say: 'Show us the Father?' Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?" This exchange shows us Jesus' disappointment with Philip, one of the chosen Twelve. Jesus was disappointed that, despite all the time Philip had spent with Jesus, Philip did not really know who he truly was.

How about us? Do we really know Jesus? How much do we know him? Many of us will probably say that we are just like Philip: we are or try to be followers of Jesus; we attend Mass regularly, we read the Bible and study his teachings. But despite all this, how much do we really know Jesus?

We ask, how do we know him? What prevents us from knowing him better or more intimately? The usual answer is our narrow-mindedness. We tend to put our knowledge of Jesus in a box of our own creation: we tell ourselves who Jesus is. The problem is that, oftentimes we get stuck in our own box, and are prevented from knowing Jesus more fully.

As seen in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the early Church faced such narrow-mindedness among many: Was the Good News of Jesus for Jews only? Or for all peoples? Paul and Barnabas were chosen to bring the Good News to the pagan nations.

Are we guilty of similar narrow-mindedness? Have we put our knowledge of Jesus in a box? Have we put limits on who he is for us?

We ask the Lord to give us open minds. May we be able to look beyond who we think Jesus is and venture into knowing who he truly is.
