MONDAY, 17th Week in Ordinary Time

July 30, 2018 – MONDAY, 17th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Peter Chrysologus,

Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Green.

Jer 13: 1 – 11 / Mt 13: 31 - 35.

St. Peter Chrysologus (c. 380 - 450), the "golden-worded," was Bishop of

Ravenna.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Jer 13: 6- 11

After many days Yahweh said to me, "Go to the torrent Perah and get the belt

I ordered you to hide there." I went to the torrent and dug up the belt but it was ruined and good for nothing, and Yahweh said to me, "In this way I will destroy the pride and great glory of Judah, this wicked people who refuse to heed what

I say, this stubborn people who go after other gods to serve and worship them. And they shall become like this belt which is now good for nothing.

"For just as a belt is to be bound around a man's waist so was the people of Israel and Judah bound to me- it is Yahweh who speaks- to be my people, my glory and my honor; but they would not listen."

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Mt 13: 31 - 34

Jesus put another parable before them, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is smaller than all other seeds, but once it is fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and rest in its branches."

He told them another parable, "The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast which a woman took and buried in three measures of flour until the whole mass of dough began to rise."

Jesus taught all this to the crowds by means of parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.

REFLECTION

In the first reading today the prophet uses the image of a belt buried in water which destroys it for the people of Israel and Judah who will be destroyed because they have refused to listen to God's commandments.

In the Gospel reading Jesus uses two parables to teach people about the kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is like a really small mustard seed which grows into the biggest of garden plants. The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast which makes the dough rise and grow.

The kingdom of heaven grows quietly but surely, like the mustard seed planted in the garden. The kingdom of heaven's growth is like that of the yeast in the dough; its effects are hidden and unseen and yet very effective. The kingdom of heaven grows quietly and surely where love abounds, in the many loving and caring deeds of so many.

Are we doing our part in hastening the arrival and growth of the kingdom of heaven in our lives and in the lives of those we touch?
