TUESDAY, 25th Week in Ordinary Time

September 26, 2017 – TUESDAY, 25th Week in Ordinary Time

Sts. Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs

Bl. Paul VI, Pope

Green

Ezr 6: 7 - 8, 12b, 14 - 20 / Lk 8: 19 - 21

Sts. Cosmas and Daman (d. 303) were brothers known for their medical skills; they were martyred under Diocletian.

Italian Bl. Paul VI (1897 - 1978) was Pope from 1963 to 1978. Elected after the pontificate of Pope St. John XXIII (1881 - 1963, Pope from 1958- 1963), he continued Vatican Council II until its conclusion.

From the 1ST READING:                Ezr 6: 14- 15

The leaders of the Jews continued to make progress in building [the Temple in Jerusalem], encouraged by what Haggai, the prophet, and Zechariah, the son of lddo, had said, and they finished the work according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus and Darius. The House was finished on the third day of the month of Adar in the sixth year of the reign of Darius.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 8: 19- 21

Then his mother and his relatives came to him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd. Someone told him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and wish to meet you". Then Jesus answered, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."

REFLECTION

The first reading tells us of the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem and the return of the people of Israel from exile in Babylon to the promised land. During this period of exile, with the guidance and teaching of prophets, Israel somehow learned more about their God who had promised to be always with them.

In the Gospel reading Jesus calls all of us to be his family, his mother, brothers and sisters, provided we "hear the word of God and do it."

When we have problems and difficult situations in our lives, we may feel we are in "exile," like the Jewish people driven away from their land and brought to Babylon. Being "in exile," we can reflect upon and hopefully realize what are our true values and our true homeland.. While in this valley of tears, we are indeed in a journey to our true home in heaven, to be with God our Father and Jesus our brother and redeemer.
