WEDNESDAY 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

FEBRUARY 15, 2012
WEDNESDAY 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Jas 1:19-27 / Mk 8:22-26

JAMES 1:19-27
My beloved, be quick to hear but slow to speak and slow to anger, for
human anger does not fulfill the justice of God. So get rid of any
filth and reject the prevailing evil, and welcome the Word that has
been planted in you and has the power to save you. Be doers of the
Word and not just hearers, lest you deceive yourselves. The hearer who
does not become a doer is like that one who looked himself at the
mirror. He looked and then promptly forgot what he was like. But those
who fix their gaze on the perfect law of freedom and hold onto it, not
listening and then forgetting, but acting on it, will find blessing on
their deeds. Those who think they are religious but do not restrain
their tongue, deceive themselves and their religion is in vain. In the
sight of God, our Father, pure and blameless religion lies in helping
the orphans and widows in their need and keeping oneself from the
world's corruption.

MARK 8:22-26
When they came to Bethsaida, Jesus was asked to touch a blind man who
was brought to him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him
outside the village. When he had put spittle on his eyes and laid his
hands upon him, he asked, "Can you see anything?" The man, who was
beginning to see, replied, "I see people! They look like trees, but
they move around." Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again and the
man could see perfectly. His sight was restored and he could see
everything clearly. Then Jesus sent him home, saying, "Do not return
to the village."

REFLECTION
St. Claude was a French Jesuit who was greatly devoted to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus. As such, he became the mentor of St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque who, after her visions, spread that devotion even wider.

St. Claude was a gifted orator. He was sent to London to preach to the
Duchess of York. He soon converted the Duke of York and many other
English protestants. Along with other Catholics, he was arrested for a
`papist plot' against Charles the Second, the King of England. Only
the intervention of the Duchess of York and the French King, Louis
XIV, allowed him to escape the death sentence. However, his health
suffered from all these trials. He returned to France where he died at
the age of 41.

St. Claude is certainly to be admired and emulated. His devotion to
Jesus' Sacred Heart permeated his whole being. In the short period of
his existence, he touched the lives of many, spreading this devotion.

How much do we actually know about the Sacred Heart of Jesus? Indeed,
we can never know enough. But we can certainly know that in Jesus'
Sacred Heart, we can find an awesome love that will follow us wherever
we go, whatever we do. We can respond to that love by loving him back,
by loving our neighbor, and yes, by loving ourselves with the same
sacred love.

MEMORIAL, SAINT CYRIL & SAINT METHODIUS

FEBRUARY 14, 2012
MEMORIAL, SAINT CYRIL & SAINT METHODIUS
TUESDAY 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Jas 1:12-18 / Mk 8:14-21

JAMES 1:12-18
Happy are those who patiently endure trials, because afterwards they
will receive the crown of life which the Lord promised to those who
love him. No one, when tempted, should say, "This temptation comes
from God." God is never tempted and he can never tempt anyone.
Instead, each of us is lured and enticed by our own evil desire. Once
this desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin, when fully
grown, gives birth to death. Do not be deceived, my beloved. Every
good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of Light, in
whom there is no change or shadow of a change. By his own will he gave
us life through the Word of Truth, that we might be a kind of offering
to him among his creatures.

MARK 8:14-21
The disciples had forgotten to bring more bread, and had only one loaf
with them in the boat. Then Jesus warned them, "Keep your eyes open,
and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." And
they said to one another, "He saw that we have no bread." Aware of
this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you talking about the loaves you are
short of? Do you not see or understand? Are your minds closed? Have
you eyes that don't see and ears that don't hear? And do you not
remember when I broke the five loaves among five thousand? How many
baskets full of leftovers did you collect?" They answered, "Twelve."
"And having distributed seven loaves to the four thousand, how many
wicker baskets of leftovers did you collect?" They answered, "Seven."
Then Jesus said to them, "Do you still not understand?"

REFLECTION
The Gospel relates that the disciples brought only one loaf of bread
on the boat. It wasn't enough for them and they were worried. Jesus
heard this, saw this, and was dismayed. All this came at the wake of
Jesus' miraculous feeding of the 4,000 people. Now here they were,
suddenly doubting their circumstances? It makes one wonder, how can
these men who were constantly in the presence of Jesus forget who they
were with and what he was truly capable of?

We are just as susceptible to these doubts and fears, maybe even more
so because he is not "physically" present with us as he was with his
disciples. And yet, we are reminded that we are constantly in the
presence of the living God. And we do forget, not in the sense that we
lose the memory of who God is in our life, but more in the sense of
having blinders on our eyes, especially when life is going well or in
times when our lifestyle becomes so jam-packed with distractions, that
we fail to make the time to spend with Him. It was because of these
"blinders" that Jesus came to ask the disciples about their hardened
hearts. And that is what we have to watch out for. Let us ask
ourselves: "Are our hearts hardened?"

Does the life we've been living reflect God's ways and God's
lifestyle? If our answer is yes, that means our faith in God is still
there. But if our answer is no, then that merits more thought. And if
we are having trouble answering these questions, then at least ask
ourselves: what has God done for me? Then go from there.

May the Spirit gift us with an open mind and an open heart, ready and
willing to accept all that God has to offer.
