TUESDAY, 33RD Week in Ordinary Time

November 21, 2017 – TUESDAY, 33RD Week in Ordinary Time
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Memorial, White

2 Mc 6: 18- 31 / Mt 12: 46- 50

The Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary originated from the second century apocryphal source, the Proto-evangelion or Book of James and the dedication on 21 November 543 of the Basilica of St. Mary the New in Jerusalem.

FROM THE FIRST READING:  2 Mc 6: 18- 19a, 30 - 31
Eleazar, one of the prominent teachers of the Law, already old and of noble appearance, was forced to open his mouth to eat the flesh of a pig. But he preferred to die honorably than to live in disgrace....

When he was at the point of death, he said groaning, "The Holy Lord, who sees all, knows that though I could have saved myself from death, I now endure terrible sufferings in my body. But in my soul, I suffer gladly because of the respect I have for him." In his death, he left a noble example and a memorial of virtue and strength, not only to the young but to the whole nation.

GOSPEL READING:  Mt 12: 46- 50
While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, "Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you."

Jesus answered, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then he pointed to his disciples and said, "Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister or mother."

REFLECTION
According to tradition, at the age of three, Mary was brought by her parents Joachim and Anne to the Temple at Jerusalem to present and consecrate her to the service of the Lord. She remained there in prayer and service until she was betrothed to Joseph. Today we pray for the men and women in monasteries and hermitages who serve the Lord and the Church through prayer and quiet work.

Today we also reflect on the responsibilities of parents for their children. Joachim and Anne took special care of their unique daughter Mary, teaching her what love and service of God are. What Christian values do we teach our children? How do we
do it? Hopefully by word and example. At the rite of baptism parents are reminded of their obligation to teach and rear their children and that they are their first teachers, and hopefully their best teachers.

Mary and Joseph, the mother and the foster-father of Jesus, did the same for the child Jesus and helped him grow "in wisdom and age, and in divine and human favor." (Lk 2:52) How have we done in the growth and development of our children?

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
