THURSDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

JUNE 20, 2013
THURSDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

2 Cor 11:1-11 / Ps 111: 1b-2. 3-4. 7-8 / Mt 6:7-15

2 Corinthians 11:1-11
May you bear with me in some little foolishness! But surely you will. I confess that I share the jealousy of God for you, for I have promised you in marriage to Christ, the only spouse, to present you to him as a pure virgin. And this is my fear: the serpent that seduced Eve with cunning could also corrupt your minds and divert you from the Christian sincerity. Someone now comes and preaches another Jesus different from the one we preach, or you are offered a different spirit from the one you have received, with a different Gospel from the one you have accepted— and you agree! I do not see how I am inferior to those super-apostles. Does my speaking leave much to be desired? Perhaps, but not my knowledge, as I have abundantly shown to you in every way. Perhaps my fault was that I humbled myself in order to uplift you, or that I gave you the Gospel free of charge. I called upon the services of other churches and served you with the support I received from them. When I was with you, although I was in need, I did not become a burden to anyone. The friends from Macedonia gave me what I needed. I have taken care not to be a burden to you in anything and I will continue to do so. By the truth of Christ within me, I will let no one in the land of Achaia stop this boasting of mine. Why? Because I do not love you? God knows that I do!

Matthew 6:7-15
When you pray, do not use a lot of words, as the pagans do, for they believe that the more they say, the more chance they have of being heard. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need, even before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, just as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us. Do not bring us to the test, but deliver us from the evil one. If you forgive others their wrongdoings, your Father in heaven will also forgive yours. If you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive you either.

REFLECTION
Every day we receive news about the realities of our society. What do we hear or read about? Murder, rape, kidnapping, hold up, human trafficking, corruption and many other human rights violations and injustices. As concerned citizens and Christians, we ask ourselves: "Why are these happening? What can we do?"

Through the Lord's prayer, Jesus teaches us how to pray. But some of us may complain to Jesus: "When is your kingdom going to come? Is it your will that we suffer?" Jesus is merciful and compassionate. He knows of our sufferings and trials. But are these realities a consequence of our sinfulness?

Jesus tells us to pray unceasingly and to trust in God. We are the symbols of hope, anticipating the coming of the glorious Kingdom to come. But Jesus reminds us that in this world we are like the wheat thrown in the fields together with bad seeds. When the servant asked to pull the bad seeds, the Lord says, "No, when you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat with them. Let them just grow together until harvest; and at harvest time I will say to the workers to pull up the weeds first and tie them in bundles and burn them. Then I will tell them to gather the wheat into my barn." Mt 13: 29-30

As Christians, we should always be generous with helping others ...."for if you keep going despite the circumstances, you will reap the rewards and be happy that you didn't give up." Gal 6:9

WEDNESDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

JUNE 19, 2013
MEMORIAL, SAINT ROMUALD, ABBOT
WEDNESDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YR I

2 Cor 9:6-11 / Ps 112: 1bc-2. 3-4. 9 / Mt 6:1-6

2 Corinthians 9:6-11
Remember: the one who sows meagerly will reap meagerly, and there shall be generous harvests for the one who sows generously. Each of you should give as you decided personally, and not reluctantly as if obliged. God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to fill you with every good thing, so that you have enough of everything at all times, and may give abundantly for any good work. Scripture says: He distributed, he gave to the poor, his good works last forever. God who provides the sower with seed will also provide him with the bread he eats. He will multiply the seed for you and also increase the interests of your good works. Become rich in every way, and give abundantly. What you give will become, through us, a thanksgiving to God.

Matthew 6:1-6
Be careful not to make a show of your righteousness before people. If you do so, you do not gain anything from your Father in heaven. When you give something to the poor, do not have it trumpeted before you, as do those who want to be seen in the synagogues and in the streets, in order to be praised by the people. I assure you, they have been already paid in full. If you give something to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your gift remains really secret. Your Father, who sees what is kept secret, will reward you. When you pray, do not be like those who want to be seen. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues or on street corners to be seen by everyone. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father who is with you in secret; and your Father who sees what is kept secret will reward you.

REFLECTION
In the gospel, Jesus speaks of the 3 pillars of Jewish religiosity – prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Jesus warns us not to parade our good deeds in order to receive praise from people around us. This is because we do good deeds not to show to others that we are good persons but because our love for God overflows into our actions. Also, we know that by doing good deeds, we become closer to God.

Prayer is a very important aspect of our Christian life. Through prayer we communicate with God who has come into our lives and who has helped us on many occasions. That is why we pray to Him in times of need and ask for His help as His children. Another way of praying is simply by listening to Him. Mother Teresa of Calcutta says that, "Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depths of our hearts."

The first reading and the gospel both speak of almsgiving. The first reading tells us to give with a cheerful heart. The gospel tells us to give alms in secret. Mother Teresa says, "Do not tire of giving, but do not give your leftovers. Give until it hurts, until you feel the pain." We know that Mother Teresa gave so much of her time and resources to the needy. We also know that because her sisters were so generous with their lives, God was also very generous with them both materially and spiritually. Whether we believe it or not, it is really better to give than to receive. Why is this so? Because it is in giving that we receive. Once you start to give generously, you will become truly happy and blessed. God cannot be outdone in generosity and if you are generous to the poor, you will experience the freedom and joy of being a son of God.
