TUESDAY, 6th Week in Ordinary Time

February 14, 2017 – TUESDAY, 6th Week in Ordinary Time
Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Bishops
Memorial, White

Gn 6: 5-8; 7:1 -5, 10 / Mk 8:14- 21

Born in Macedonia, Sts. Cyril (d. 869), a monk, and Methodius (d. 885) who became Archbishop of Sirmium, "the Apostles to the Slavs," were brothers who evangelized Eastern Europe. Together with St. Benedict, Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed them co-Patrons of Europe.

FROM THE 1ST READING:     Gn 6: 5- 8
Yahweh saw how great was the wickedness of man on the earth and that evil was always the only thought in his heart. Yahweh regretted having created man on the earth and his heart grieved. He said, "I will destroy man whom I created and blot him out from the face of the earth, as well as the beasts, creeping creatures and birds, for I am sorry I made them." But Noah was pleasing to God.

GOSPEL READING:     Mk 8: 14- 21
The disciples had forgotten to bring more bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. Then Jesus warned them, "Keep your eyes open and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." And they said to one another, "He saw that we have no bread."

Aware of this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you talking about the loaves you are short of? Do you not see or understand? Are your minds closed? Have you eyes that don't see and ears that don't hear? "And do you not remember when I broke the five loaves among the five thousand? How many baskets full of leftovers did you collect?" They answered, "Twelve." "And having seen loaves for the four thousand, how many wicker baskets of leftovers did you collect?" They answered, "Seven." Then Jesus said to them, "Do you still not understand?"

REFLECTION
In the first reading from Genesis we are told that mankind had become so corrupt and evil that God decided to rid the earth of mankind. This is the frightening scenario of the great flood when only Noah, his family and animals in his ark were saved. How many men today would be pleasing in God's eyes, as Noah was pleasing to God in his time?

In the Gospel reading Jesus teaches us to see and hear the real message he was giving. Unlike the poor disciples who still did not see nor understand his miracle of multiplication of loaves and fishes, Jesus wants us to see his mission of conversion of heart. His miracles were to have people see that he had come to save mankind from evil, sinfulness and the effects of sin. His teaching and miracles were for them to see God's hand in their lives.

We pray for the grace of true conversion from our sinful ways and of genuine faith in Christ and his message of salvation.
