FRIDAY, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

July 27, 2018 - FRIDAY, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

Green.

Jer 3: 14 - 17 / Mt 13: 18 – 23

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Jer 3: 14- 15

Come back, faithless people- it is Yahweh who speaks- for I am your Master. I will select one from a city and two from a family and bring you to Zion. Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and prudence..

GOSPEL READING:           Mt 13: 18- 23

Jesus said, "Now listen to the parable of the sower. When a person hears the message of the Kingdom but without taking it to himself, the devil comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed that fell along the footpath.

"The seed that fell on rocky ground stands for the one who hears the word and accepts it at once with joy. But this is fickle and has no roots. No sooner is he harassed or persecuted because of the word than he gives up.

"The seed that fell among the thistles is the one who hears the word, but then the worries of this life and the love of money choke the word, and it does not bear fruit.

"As for the seed that fell on good soil it is the one who hears the word and understands it; this bears fruit and produces a hundred, or sixty, or thirty times more."

REFLECTION

Be the good seed that grows on rich soil!

In today's Gospel reading on the seed and the sower Jesus speaks of the fate of the seed sown in different types of ground. These represent the levels of understanding of the word of God and the varied responses to it.

The seed that falls on the path symbolizes a person who receives the good news but does not really understand, caused not only by his dull mind but also by the work of the Evil One The seed that falls on rocky ground represents those who hear and instantly respond with enthusiasm, but, when difficulties arise, they do not persevere.

The seed that falls among thorns is for those who hear but are distracted, even enslaved by the materialistic world, and thus yields nothing at the end.

Jesus teaches us to receive the word like the seed that falls on fertile soil, who hears and understands the word of God and wholeheartedly embraces the Good News, ready and enthusiastic to be a living witness of God's love for everyone.. Despite trials and difficulties, such people are centered on knowing, loving, following and serving our Lord so that they could live meaningful and fruitful lives.
