THURSDAY, 22ND Week in Ordinary Time

September 3, 2015 THURSDAY, 22ND Week in Ordinary Time
St. Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church
Memorial, White

Col 1:9 – 14 / Lk 5:1-11

[Pope St. Gregory the Great (540 – 604) instituted liturgical reforms and organized missions. He was the first to send missionaries to England.]

Reading: Col 1:9 – 14
Because of this, from the day we received news of you, we have not ceased praying to God for you, that you may attain the full knowledge of his will through all the gifts of wisdom and spiritual understanding.
May your lifestyle be worthy of the Lord and completely pleasing to him. May you bear fruit in every good work and grow in the knowledge of God.
May you become strong in everything by a sharing of the Glory of God, so that you may have great endurance and persevere in joy.
Constantly give thanks to the Father who has empowered us to receive our share in the inheritance of the saints in his kingdom of light. He rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. In him we are redeemed and forgiven.

Gospel: Lk 5:1-11
One day, as Jesus stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, with a crowd gathered around him listening to the word of God, he caught sight of two boats left at the water's edge by the fishermen now washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to pull out a little from the shore. There he sat and continued to teach the crowd.
When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon replied, "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I will lower the nets." This they did and caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats almost to the point of sinking.
Upon seeing this, Simon Peter fell at Jesus' knees, saying, "Leave me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" For he and his companions were amazed at the catch they had made and so were Simon's partners, James and John, Zebedee's sons.
Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. You will catch people from now on." So they brought their boats to land and followed him, leaving everything.

Reflection:
It is interesting to see how Jesus selects the first apostles. Conventional wisdom would dictate to choose the most qualified people who have the most experience, knowledge, resources and connections to establish a church. Instead Jesus selects fishermen and all sorts of ordinary folk. Maybe a couple or so have higher qualifications, but nobody would think that the men Christ chose have the potential to change the world with their natural abilities.
But Christ knew what he was doing. He knew that his choice of close followers would be able to proclaim his word to the nations, but not on their own strength. He knew that, when the time comes, they would be able to continue his work with the help of the Holy Spirit. His only condition was for them to leave everything behind and follow him.
Many times, we rely on our own wisdom and the wisdom of the world to make choices and decisions. But how often have we asked what God wants for us?  Do we ask him to help us to decide on our state of life, our spouse, our job, our life?
For a faithful follower of Christ, Christ and his words should be at the center of his/her life and choices, actions and decisions need to be centered around Christ.

[Bl. Thomas Sitjar (1866 – 1936), Spanish Jesuit priest, and ten others were martyred during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.]

Reading: Col 1:1 – 8

Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God and Timothy our brother, to the saints in Colossae, our faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Receive grace and peace from God our Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord. Thanks be to God, the Father of Christ Jesus, our Lord!

We constantly pray for you, for we have known of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints. Indeed you await in hope the inheritance reserved for you in heaven, of which you have heard through the word of truth. This Gospel, already present among you, is bearing fruit and growing throughout the world, as it did among you from the day you accepted it and understood the gift of God in all its truth.

He who taught you, Epaphras, our dear companion in the service of Christ, faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, has reminded me of the love you have for me in the spirit.

Gospel: Lk 4:38 - 44

Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the house of Simon. His mother-in-law was suffering from high fever and they asked him to do something for her.  Bending over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and waited on them.

At sunset, people suffering from many kinds of sickness were brought to Jesus. Laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Demons were driven out, howling as they departed from their victims, "You are the Son of God!" He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, for they knew he was the Messiah.

Jesus left at daybreak and looked for a solitary place. People went out in search for him and, finding him, they tried to dissuade him from leaving. But he said, "I have to go to the other towns to announce the good news of the kingdom of God. That is what I was sent to do." So Jesus continued to preach in the synagogues of the Jewish country.

Reflection:

The Gospel reading presents to us Jesus in his busy public ministry, bringing relief to the sick and those possessed by evil spirits, in addition to his teaching and preaching.  His cure of Peter's mother-in-law is an example of his concern for the sick and those in need.

We see Jesus going off alone into a lonely place. The Gospel of Mark says, "Very early in the morning, before daylight, Jesus went off to a lonely place where he prayed." (Mk 1:35) Prayer and communion with his heavenly Father are key moments in Jesus' daily life, to be with and to thank his Father.

Jesus' example of prayer time with his Father is important for all of us who claim to be his followers. It is important that, even in the midst of our busy daily lives, we find quiet time with God.  It is important for us to praise and thank God for his mercy and goodness to us. It is important to be with God our Father in heaven.

St. Ignatius of Loyola taught and lived the importance of prayer in his life. In the midst of all his heavy apostolic activities, he felt the need to be with God, to find God in all things. He taught his followers to be and to live as  "contemplatives in action."
