SATURDAY, 24TH Week in Ordinary Time

September 23, 2017 – SATURDAY, 24TH Week in Ordinary Time

St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, Priest

Memorial, White

1 Tim 6: 13 - 16 / Lk 8: 4- 15

St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (1887 - 1968), a Capuchin friar, spiritual adviser, confessor and intercessor, was famous for bearing the Stigmata. Pope St. John Paul II beatified him on 02 May 1999 and canonized him on 16 June 2002.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          1 Tim 6: 14- 15

I command you to keep the commandments. Keep yourself pure and blameless until the glorious coming of Christ Jesus, our Lord, which God will bring about at the proper time, he the magnificant sovereign, King of kings and Lord of lords.

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Lk 8: 9- 15

The disciples asked him, "What does this story mean?" And Jesus answered, "You have been granted to know the mystery of the kingdom of God. But to others it is given in the form of stories, or parables, so that seeing they may not perceive and hearing they may not understand.

"Now this is the point of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the wayside are people who hear it, but immediately the devil comes and takes the word from their minds, for he doesn't want them to believe and be saved. Those on rocky ground are people who receive the word with joy, but they have no root; they believe for a while and give way in time of trial. Among the thorns are people who hear the word but as they go their way are choked by worries, riches and the pleasures of life; they bring no fruit to maturity. The good soil, instead, are people who receive the word and keep it in a gentle and generous mind, and persevering patiently, they bear fruit."

REFLECTION

When we hear Mass we receive God's word. When we receive God's word we are called to embrace it and to live guided by it. God communicates his love for us. The problem is that, oftentimes, we do not allow God's word to inspire and transform us. We are so busy with so many things that we do not allow his word to influence our very being.

The Gospels call us to treasure the word of God, to listen to it, to imbibe it and even to fight for it. The world around us may lure us into believing that riches, pleasure and success can fill our empty hearts. However, we soon find out that this is not so. True joy in life can be found only when we live according to God's word.

Temptations never end; we will experience challenges, difficulties and trials but the Gospel reminds us that, despite all these, we must learn to persevere and continue to have faith that God will lead and help us on the proper paths. As God's servants and followers of Christ, let us prepare to receive God's word and become good and productive soil to bear much fruit.
