FRIDAY, 8TH Week in Ordinary Time

June 1, 2018 – FRIDAY, 8TH Week in Ordinary Time

St. Justin, Martyr

Memorial. Red..

1 Pt 4: 7- 13 / Mk 11: 11- 26

St.. Justin (d. 165), a lawyer from Samaria, was martyred in Rome during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Called "The Philosopher," he was among the greatest Christian apologists of the second century.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             1 Pt 4: 7- 8, 12- 13

The end of all things is near; live wisely and spend evening time praying. Above all, let your love for one another be sincere, for love covers a multitude of sins....

My dear people, do not be surprised that you are being tested by fire. It is not an unusual occurrence. Instead, you should be glad to share in the sufferings of Christ because, on the day his Glory is revealed, you will also fully rejoice.

From the Gospel Reading:            Mk 11: 22- 26

And Jesus replied. "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, if you say to this mountain: 'Get up and throw yourself into the sea,' and have no doubt in your heart but believe that what you say will happen, it will be done for you. Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it shall be done for you. And when you stand to pray, forgive whatever you may hold against anyone, so that your heavenly Father may also forgive your sins."

REFLECTION

In ttie first reading the Apostle Peter urges us to live always in the love of one

another. He also reminds us that suffering is part and parcel of our lives, because suffering allows us to share in the sufferings of Christ, that we may also be ready to share and fully rejoice in his glory. God tests those whom he loves.

In the Gospel reading Jesus assures us of God's help when we pray. God answers all our prayers. With prayer we can move mountains: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you." (Lk 11: 9) "Even you evil people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more then will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him." (Lk 11: 13)

May we accept difficulties and trials, even suffering, as gifts from God. Indeed we are assured that, with prayer and God's help, all things we need will be given to us, his children.
