Jer 31:1 – 7 / Mt 15:21 – 28

From the 1st Reading: Jer 31: 1, 7
Yahweh declares that when that time comes he will be the God of all the
Families of Israel, and they will be his people.

For Yahweh says this:  Shout with joy for Jacob; rejoice for the greatest of nations.  Proclaim your praise and say: "Yahweh has saved his people, the remnant of Israel!"

Gospel Reading: Mt 15: 21 - 28
Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.  Now a Canaanite woman came from those borders and began to cry out, "Lord, Son of David, have pity on me! My daughter is tormented by a demon." But Jesus did not answer her, not even a word. So his disciples approached him and said, "Send her away: see how she is shouting after us."

Then Jesus said to her, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel."

But the woman was already kneeling before Jesus and said, "Sir, help me!" Jesus answered, "It is not right to take the bread from the children and throw it to the little dogs."  The woman replied, "It is true, sir, but even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master's table." Then Jesus said, "Woman, how great is your faith! Let it be as you wish." And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Reflection
The Gospel reading simply shows how anyone who has true faith in the Lord can have his or her prayer answered. To the Lord, everyone has the same opportunity to receive God's grace. It is not meant solely for His chosen people but for anyone who has that unwavering faith in him.

We go through many rejections, but Jesus wants to empower us to "beg" for what we need. In this scene, our Lord is in an area for foreigners. That is why a Canaanite woman was able to approach him. It may seem like Jesus did not want to help this mother by telling her that he came for the Jewish faithful only. But perhaps, he was only trying to see how much she really wanted him to heal her daughter.

By bravely proclaiming that even if she was not a Jew, she was still willing to get the crumbs or whatever was leftover, she impressed Christ to proudly declare that she had so much faith in his healing touch.

If we could only have such a faith, what a grace that would be!

Tuesday, 18th Week in Ordinary Time

02 August 2016
Tuesday, 18th Week in Ordinary Time
St. Peter Faber, Priest
St. Eusebius of Vercelli, Bishop;
St. Peter Julian Eymard, Priest
Memorial.       White.

Jer 30:1 -2, 12 – 15, 18 – 22 / Mt 14:  22 – 36

Savoyard St. Peter Faber (1506 – 1546), ordained a priest in 1534, was the first priest of the Society of Jesus. He was among its founding members (1540).  At the Pope's bidding he preached all over Europe. Beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1872, he was canonized by Pope Francis on 17 December 2013.

St. Eusebius of Vercelli (283? – 371), from Sardinia, was the first Bishop of Vercelli in northern Italy; he defended the divinity of Christ against the Arians.

Frenchman St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811 – 1868), greatly devoted to the Eucharist, founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.

From the Gospel Reading: Mt 14:23 - 33
And having sent the people away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. At nightfall, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it.

At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. When they saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. And they cried out in fear.  But at once Jesus said to them, "Courage! Don't be afraid. It's me!"  Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water."

Jesus said to him, "Come." And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus. But, in face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink. So he cried out, "Lord, save me!"  Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying, "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?"

As they got into the boat, the wind dropped. Then those in the boat bowed down before Jesus saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God!"

Reflection
"Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" These words of Jesus to Peter truly resonate in our daily life. We pray to Jesus, we praise him, we try our best to follow him, and yet there are times when our faith falters in situations when our prayers seem to be unanswered.

Let us continue to pray and trust in God who loves us beyond measure, keeping in mind that the Holy Spirit is always guiding us, helping us to overcome all the difficulties and trials we face daily.  Let our prayer be, "Lord, I believe!  Help my unbelief."
