Saturday 12th Week in Ordinary Time

June 30, 2007
Saturday 12th Week in Ordinary Time - Year I

GENESIS 18:1-15
The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he
was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.
Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them,
he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to
the ground. He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do
not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you
may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you
something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way--now
that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do
as you say." So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he
said, "get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some
bread." Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and
gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some
curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these
before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. "Where
is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said.
Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next
year, and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at
the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were
already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of
childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am
worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?" Then
the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, `Will I really
have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD? I
will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have
a son." Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But
he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

MATTHEW 8:5-17
When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for
help. "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in
terrible suffering." Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." The
centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my
roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I
myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this
one, `Go,' and he goes; and that one, `Come,' and he comes. I say to
my servant, `Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was
astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I
have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you
that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their
places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of
heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into
the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Then
Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed
it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. When Jesus
came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed
with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got
up and began to wait on him. When evening came, many who were demon-
possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a
word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken
through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried
our diseases."

REFLECTION
We often speak of faith as if it were a thing. It is as if faith were
some kind of charm to be worn around the neck which will ensure us a
safe and happy journey through life. Faith is not a thing. It is a
relationship with God; one of love and trust. If you wish to measure
the quality and depth of your faith, all you have to do is look at the
place God has in your life. Is God real in your everyday life? Is God
the one to whom your life is flowing like a river to the sea, the one
around whom your life revolves?

This is the heart of Christian faith - a relationship of intimacy with
God in all your daily undertakings, great and small. It is not a
complicated thing. It is a simple childlike trust in God and a desire
to do his will. Faith does not ensure us a comfortable journey through
life. What it does is give us bearings in a topsy-turvy world. It
gives us hope that all our sufferings and struggles have a meaning. If
faith is a gift from God, we have no need to be ashamed to confess and
pray: "Lord, I believe; help my belief. Without faith in God we are
like someone trying to read at night without a lamp. We should hold on
to this faith as to a lantern that will lead us safely home.
