FEAST, CHAIR OF SAINT PETER, APOSTLE
FEAST, CHAIR OF SAINT PETER, APOSTLE
FRIDAY 1ST WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
Ezk 18:21-28 / Ps 23: 1-3a. 4. 5. 6 / Mt 5:20-26
EZEKIEL 18:21-28
If the sinner turns from his sin, observes my decrees and practices what is right and just, he will live, he will not die. None of the sins he com mitted will be charged against him; he will live as a consequence of his righteous deeds. Do I want the death of the sinner?—word of Yahweh. Do I not rather want him to turn from his ways and live? But if the righteous man turns away from what is good and commits sins as the wicked do, will he live? His righteous deeds will no longer be credited to him, but he will die because of his in fidelity and his sins. But you say: Yahweh's way is not just! Why, Israel! Is my position wrong? Is it not rather that yours is wrong? If the righteous man dies after turning from his righteous deeds and sinning, he dies because of his sins. And if the wicked man does what is good and right, after turning from the sins he com mitted, he will save his life. He will live and not die, because he has opened his eyes and turned from the sins he had committed.
MATTHEW 5:20-26
I tell you then, if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to our people in the past: Do not commit murder; anyone who does kill will have to face trial. But now I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister deserves to be brought before the council. Whoever calls a brother or a sister "Fool!" deserves to be thrown into the fire of hell. So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar, and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with him, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Don't forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. There you will stay, until you have paid the last penny.
REFLECTION
"Do I want the death of the sinner? – word of Yahweh. Do I not rather want him to turn from his ways and live?"
As a Father to us all, God does not bear grudges for past transgressions and mistakes. God is aware of all our imperfections and all our sins. He even hears the evil thoughts that are buried deep in our hearts. Sinners though we all are, God is anxious to forgive us all our sins. We only have to approach Him with a contrite heart. And Lent is a good time for us to slow down and reflect, in silence, to find God and to hear His voice. As Mother Teresa said, "We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence."
And so in the silence of our hearts and minds, let us try to find God and hear His voice, and ask hard questions about ourselves. How have I responded to God's love and mercy? Have I, in turn, been loving, merciful, and forgiving to those who have offended me?

THURSDAY 1ST WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
MEMORIAL, SAINT PETER DAMIAN, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
THURSDAY 1ST WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
Es C, 12,14-16,23-25 / Ps 138: 1-2ab. 2cde-3. 7c-8 / Mt 7:7-12
ESTHER C, 12,14-16,23-25
Queen Esther, seized with mortal anguish, fled to the Lord for refuge. she prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, saying: "My Lord, you alone are our King. Help me, who am alone and have no help but you, for I am taking my life in my hand. From birth, I have heard among my people that you, Lord, chose Israel from among all nations, and our ancestors from among all their forebears, as a lasting inheritance, and that you fulfilled all your promises to them. Be mindful of us, Lord. Make yourself known in the time of our distress and give me courage, King of gods and Ruler of every power. Put in my mouth persuasive words in the presence of the lion, and turn his heart to hatred for our enemy, so that he and his co-conspirators may perish. Save us by your power, and help me, who am alone and have no one but you, Lord.
MATTHEW 7:7-12
Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; and the door will be opened to him who knocks. Would any of you give a stone to your son, when he asks for bread? Or give him a snake, when he asks for a fish? As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets.
REFLECTION
In our Gospel today, God is showing us His unconditional love. When He says, "Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened," He is telling us that we just have to wait, believe and have faith because in His time, all our prayers will be answered.
God our loving Father loves us so much that He sent His only Son to save us. He promised to give us the best. He gave us free will so we can think for ourselves and for others. He is just waiting for us to tell Him what we need and what we desire. He will surely give what is best for us if we ask, seek and knock. Prayer is the best way to communicate with God, and through the intercession of Mama Mary and our Lord Jesus Christ, nothing is impossible with our Father in heaven.
