TUESDAY, 16th Week in Ordinary Time
July 24, 2018 – TUESDAY, 16th Week in Ordinary Time
St. Sharbel Makhluf, Priest
Mi 7: 14- 15, 18- 20 / Mt 12: 46- 50
St. Sharbel Makhluf (1828- 1898) was a Lebanese monk and hermit.
FROM THE 1ST READING: Mi 7: 14- 15, 18- 19
Shepherd your people with your staff, shepherd the flock of your inheritance that dwells alone in the scrub, in the midst of a fertile land. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead as in the days of old, in the days when you went out ot Egypt.
Who is a god like you, who takes away guilt and pardons crime for the remnant of his inheritance? Who is like you whose anger does not last? For you delight in merciful forgiveness. Once again you will show us your loving kindness and trample on our wrongs, casting all our sins into the depths of the sea.
GOSPEL READING: Mt 12: 46- 50
While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, "Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you."
Jesus answered, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then he pointed to his disciples and said, "Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother."
In the midst of defeat and ruin of Israel, in the first reading the prophet Micah encourages the people by reminding them that Yahweh was their God and faithful shepherd, full of mercy and compassion.
In the Gospel reading Jesus calls his followers as his family: "Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother."
To follow Jesus, to be his kin, means to listen to him and to do what he says. We can only say we are his disciples if we are faithful to his commands.
To be able to do so, we must learn to know him more, love him more and thus be able to follow him
We are members of Christ's Church; we are members of his Body, the Church. Let us live our lives faithfully as members of our parish, of our Christian community.
