FEAST, STS. PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES

MAY 3, 2011
FEAST, STS. PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES
TUESDAY 2ND WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR I

1 Cor 15:1-8 / Ps 19:2-3, 4-5 / Jn 14:6-14

1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-8
Let me remind you, broth ers and sisters, of the Good News that I
preached to you and which you received and on which you stand firm. By
that Gospel you are saved, provided that you hold to it as I preached
it. Otherwise, you will have believed in vain. In the first place, I
have passed on to you what I myself received: that Christ died for our
sins, as Scripture says; that he was buried; that he was raised on the
third day, according to the Scriptures; that he appeared to Cephas and
then to the Twelve. Afterwards he appeared to more than five hundred
brothers and sisters together; most of them are still alive, although
some have already gone to rest. Then he appeared to James and after
that to all the apostles. And last of all, he appeared to the most
despicable of them, this is to me.
JOHN 14:6-14
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the
Father but through me. If you know me, you will know the Father also;
indeed you know him, and you have seen him." Philip asked him, "Lord,
show us the Father, and that is enough." Jesus said to him, "What! I
have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say, `Show us the
Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is
in me? All that I say to you, I do not say of myself. The Father who
dwells in me is doing his own work. Believe me when I say that I am in
the Father and the Father is in me; at least believe it on the
evidence of these works that I do. Truly, I say to you, the one who
believes in me will do the same works that I do; and he will even do
greater than these, for I am going to the Father. Everything you ask
in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Indeed, anything you ask, calling upon my name, I will do.

REFLECTION
Philip's discipleship started when he first met Jesus who told him,
"Follow me." (Jn 1:43). He then called on his friend, Nathaniel, to
meet Jesus who replied, "Can any thing good come from Nazareth?" But
to this Philip said, "Come and see" (Jn 1:46). Thus his apostolate
began, until he is martyred by crucifixion in Asia Minor.

In today's Gospel, Philip says, "Lord, let us see the Father and we
shall be satisfied." This he said after three years of being a friend
and disciple of Jesus, just before the last supper. Jesus
affectionately chides him, "Have I been with you all this time,
Philip, and you still do not know me?"

If the apostles who had shared meals with Jesus, heard him speak and
seen him do his work could not fully grasp that they were actually in
God's presence, how much more we, who live by faith alone? Jesus knows
our human weaknesses but calls on our sensitivity to his presence in
every moment of our lives. We must recognize him in the Holy
Eucharist, where we exclaim, "My Lord and my God" as Thomas did (Jn
20:28). Let us also, together with James and Philip, begin our
apostolate by leading our relatives, friends, acquaintances and
clients to "come and see" Jesus.

MEMORIAL, ST. ATHANASIUS, BISHOP
MONDAY 2ND WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR I

Acts 4:23-31 / Ps 2:1-3, 4-6, 7-9 / Jn 3:1-8

ACTS 4:23-31
As soon as Peter and John were set free, they went to their friends
and reported what the chief priests and elders had said to them. When
they heard it, they raised their voices as one and called upon God,
"Sovereign Lord, maker of heaven and earth, of the sea and everything
in them, you have put these words in the mouth of David, our father
and your servant, through the Holy Spirit: Why did the pagan nations
rage and the people conspire in folly? The kings of the earth were
aligned and the princes gathered together against the Lord and against
his Messiah. For indeed in this very city Herod with Pontius Pilate,
and the pagans together with the people of Israel conspired against
your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. Thus, indeed, they brought
about whatever your powerful will had decided from all time would
happen. But now, Lord, see their threats against us and enable your
servants to speak your word with all boldness. Stretch out your hand
to heal and to work signs and wonders through the Name of Jesus your
holy servant." When they had prayed, the place where they were
gathered together shook, and they were all filled with Holy Spirit and
began to speak the word of God boldly.

JOHN 3:1-8
Among the Pharisees there was a ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus. He
came to Jesus by night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you have come
from God to teach us, for no one can perform miraculous signs like
yours unless God is with him." Jesus replied, "Truly, I say to you, no
one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again from above."
Nicodemus said, "How can there be rebirth for a grown man? Who could
go back to his mother's womb and be born again?" Jesus replied,
"Truly, I say to you: No one can enter the kingdom of God without
being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh,
and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Because of this, don't be
surprised when I say: `You must be born again from above.' The wind
blows where it pleases and you hear its sound, but you don't know
where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with
everyone who is born of the Spirit."

REFLECTION
The Catholic Church teaches that we were born anew when we were
baptized while we were still infants. Our baptism was in compliance
with the teaching of Jesus that we must be born anew so that we may be
able to enter the Kingdom of God. This is also in compliance with the
instructions of Jesus to his disciples when he said, "Go therefore and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the
close of the age."

We Catholics do not believe that we have to be older, or even attain
the age of reason, before we may be baptized. We believe that it is
not our intellect or our attainment of the age of reason that makes
the baptism effective. Our being born anew is by the grace of God
bestowed upon us when the priest baptizes us "in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

The intellect is not always the best guide when it comes to our
relationship with God. Sometimes the intellect can even mislead us
into rejecting the revealed truths in the Gospel of Christ. We often
need guidance in our discernment process and it is the Holy Spirit who
leads us to make the correct decision. This is why the Church, in the
exercise of its Magisterium, strives to keep our faith in the
teachings of Christ constant and on solid ground as handed down to us
from the time of Jesus up to the present based on the Holy Bible and
the accepted traditions of our Church.
