MEMORIAL, ST. AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY, BISHOP

MAY 27, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST. AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY, BISHOP
THURSDAY 8TH WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR II

FIRST PETER 2:2-5, 9-12
Like new-born babies all your longing should be for milk -- the
unadulterated spiritual milk -- which will help you to grow up to
salvation, at any rate if you have tasted that the Lord is good . He
is the living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and
precious to him; set yourselves close to him so that you, too, may be
living stones making a spiritual house as a holy priesthood to offer
the spiritual sacrifices made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
But you are a chosen race, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, a
people to be a personal possession to sing the praises of God who
called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were
a non-people and now you are the People of God; once you were outside
his pity; now you have received pity. I urge you, my dear friends, as
strangers and nomads, to keep yourselves free from the disordered
natural inclinations that attack the soul. Always behave honourably
among gentiles so that they can see for themselves what moral lives
you lead, and when the day of reckoning comes, give thanks to God for
the things which now make them denounce you as criminals.

MARK 10:46-52
They reached Jericho; and as he left Jericho with his disciples and a
great crowd, Bartimaeus -- that is, the son of Timaeus -- a blind
beggar, was sitting at the side of the road. When he heard that it was
Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and cry out, 'Son of David,
Jesus, have pity on me.' And many of them scolded him and told him to
keep quiet, but he only shouted all the louder, 'Son of David, have
pity on me.' Jesus stopped and said, 'Call him here.' So they called
the blind man over. 'Courage,' they said, 'get up; he is calling you.'
So throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus. Then Jesus
spoke, 'What do you want me to do for you?' The blind man said to him,
'Rabbuni, let me see again.' Jesus said to him, 'Go; your faith has
saved you.' And at once his sight returned and he followed him along
the road.

REFLECTION
Today's gospel was repeatedly the subject of preaching among the early
Christian communities, because Christians saw in Bartimaeus the blind
beggar their own picture. They realized how their coming to the faith
had been a miracle worked by Jesus. Jesus gives to a Christian,
spiritual eyesight, faith, in much the same way as he gave bodily
eyesight to Bartimaeus. The Church invites us to reflect, as those
early Christians did, on these three points: The pitiable situation of
a person before coming to Christ. The great mercy Jesus displays
giving us faith in himself, and the tremendous change that takes place
in a Christian after accepting Christ.

A person without Christ is indeed a blind man. A man without Christ in
his heart cannot see the Savior even when he passes close to him in
the daily events of his life. A person without Christ in his heart
cannot see God's plans for him; he goes on in life aimlessly. A person
without Christ in his heart is led further and further away from God.
Greediness, ambition, pleasure, pull him in various directions.

Christ passes close to each one of us and invites us to come to him.
There is a moment in the life of every person when Jesus comes to him.
He comes in many ways and he comes with the express intention of
saving and healing us. Happy are we if we acknowledge these things:
our misery, our blindness and our own powerlessness and realize that
it is only Jesus who can save us.

MEMORIAL, ST. PHILIP NERI, PRIEST

MAY 26, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST. PHILIP NERI, PRIEST
WEDNESDAY 8TH WEEK OF EASTER – YEAR II

FIRST PETER 1:18-25
For you know that the price of your ransom from the futile way of life
handed down from your ancestors was paid, not in anything perishable
like silver or gold, but in precious blood as of a blameless and
spotless lamb, Christ. He was marked out before the world was made,
and was revealed at the final point of time for your sake. Through him
you now have faith in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him
glory for this very purpose -- that your faith and hope should be in
God. Since by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves
so that you can experience the genuine love of brothers, love each
other intensely from the heart; for your new birth was not from any
perishable seed but from imperishable seed, the living and enduring
Word of God. For all humanity is grass, and all its beauty like the
wild flower's. As grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of the
Lord remains for ever. And this Word is the Good News that has been
brought to you.

MARK 10:32-45
They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem; Jesus was walking on
ahead of them; they were in a daze, and those who followed were
apprehensive. Once more taking the Twelve aside he began to tell them
what was going to happen to him, 'Now we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chief priests and
the scribes. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to
the gentiles, who will mock him and spit at him and scourge him and
put him to death; and after three days he will rise again.' James and
John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him. 'Master,' they said to him,
'We want you to do us a favour.' He said to them, 'What is it you want
me to do for you?' They said to him, 'Allow us to sit one at your
right hand and the other at your left in your glory.' But Jesus said
to them, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup
that I shall drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I shall
be baptised?' They replied, 'We can.' Jesus said to them, 'The cup
that I shall drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I
shall be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right
hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to
whom they have been allotted.' When the other ten heard this they
began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to
him and said to them, 'You know that among the gentiles those they
call their rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their
authority felt. Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants
to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants
to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of man himself
came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom
for many.'

REFLECTION
The values taught through Jesus' kingdom turns the world values upside
down. The demands of building that kingdom would entail a lot more
that what we could imagine. Jesus cautions then: "do you not know what
you are asking?" Not until the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles did
the remarkable transformation take place and the rest was history.
History would reveal that except for John, the disciple whom Jesus
loved, all the rest of the apostles died a "martyrs' death". The cup
which Jesus drank, which his followers must drink and the baptism
which Jesus was baptized, we must also be baptized.

With God's grace everything is possible. As we go about our Christian
vocation, do we often rely on our own effort and understanding or do
we humbly ask and faithfully cooperate with God's Spirit to transform
us and our Christian Community?
