THURSDAY, 6th Week of Easter

May 10, 2018 – THURSDAY, 6th Week of Easter

St. Damien Joseph de Veuster of Moloka'i, Priest

White.

Acts 18: 1 - 8 / Jn 16: 16- 20

Born in Belgium, St. Damien Joseph de Veuster of Moloka'l (1840 - 1888), a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, worked as a missionary in Hawaii before he volunteered to work at the leper colony in Moloka'i. During the last four years of his life he became a leper among the lepers.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Acts 18: 5-8

When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was able to give himself wholly to preaching and proving to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. One day when they opposed him, and insulted him, he shook the dust from his clothes in protest, saying, "You yourselves will account for your deeds! I am not to blame if from now on I go to non-Jews!"

So Paul left there and went to the house of a God-fearing man named Titus Justus who lived next door to the synagogue. A leading man of the synagogue, Crispus, along with his whole household, believed in the Lord. On hearing Paul, many more Corinthians believed and were baptized.

GOSPEL READING:           Jn 16: 16- 20

Jesus said to his disciples, "A little while and you will see me no more; and then a little while, and you will see me." Some of the disciples wondered, "What does he mean by: 'A little while and you will not see me, and then a little while and you will see me'? And why did he say: 'I go to the Father'?" And they said to one another, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not understand."

Jesus knew that they wanted to question him; so he said to them, "You are puzzled because I told you that in a little while you will see me no more, and then a little while later you will see me. Truly, I say to you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy."

REFLECTION

In the first reading we read about Paul's missionary work. Rejected by many Jews, Paul turns to non-Jews: "You yourselves will account for your deeds! I am not to blame if from now on I go to non-Jews!"

The Gospel reading today is from Jesus' farewell discourse to his apostles after the Last Supper. Jesus was preparing his disciples for his passion and death, and after his resurrection, for his return to the Father.. Jesus would leave his apostles, but he would not leave them completely. Jesus told his apostles that he would leave them but would send the Spirit of Truth, the Helper, to comfort and guide them.

Today and forever he sits in power at the right hand of the Father, as Son of God- made Man, as our Savior and Intercessor with the Father. Forever he is our Brother before our heavenly Father. Indeed he has really never left us!
