THURSDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 5, 2017 – THURSDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time

St. Mary Faustina Kowalska, Religious

Green

Neh 8: 1- 4a, 5-6, 7b -12 / Lk 10: 1 -12

From Poland, St. Mary Faustina Kowalska (1905 - 1938) had many visions and apparitions from Our Lord who requested promotion of devotion to the Divine Mercy.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Neh 8: 5 - 6

Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was in a higher place; and when he opened it, all the people stood. Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God; and all the people lifted up their hands and answered, "Amen! Amen!" And they bowed their heads to the ground.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 10: 1 - 12

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where he himself was to go. And he said to them, "The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. So you must ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest. Courage! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know.

"Whatever house you enter, first bless them saying, 'Peace to this house.' If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest upon that person. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in that house eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves to be paid. Do not move from house to house.

"When they welcome you in any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.'

"But in any town where you are not welcome, go to the marketplace and proclaim, 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off and leave with you. But know and be sure that the kingdom of God had come to you.' I tell you that on Judgment Day it will be better for Sodom than for this town."

REFLECTION

In the first reading Ezra leads the people in confirming their covenant with Yahweh as he read to them from the Book of the Law of Moses. "Amen! Amen!" they responded.

In the Gospel reading Jesus sends off his disciples to preach the Good News and spread the Kingdom of God. They told people about life with God.

Pope St. John Paul II often spoke of the "Culture of Life," as opposed to the "Culture of Death." God gives us the Holy Spirit to bring us the fullness of life. To live this true "Culture of Life," we have to give up inordinate inclinations centering on ourselves.

To preach the Good News is also to transform individuals and communities with God's grace so that they live in God's peace and joy.

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!

WEDNESDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 4, 2017 – WEDNESDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time
St. Francis of Assisi, Religious Founder
Memorial, White

Neh 2: 1 - 8 / Lk 9: 57- 62

Born in Assisi, St. Francis (1182 - 1226) preached and lived poverty. He founded the Order of the Friars Minor in 1210 (Franciscans) and, with St. Clare (1193/94 - 1253), the Order of Poor Clares. He also founded a third Order of Brothers and Sisters of Penance. He is the patron saint for animals, ecologists and merchants.

GOSPEL READING: Lk 9: 57- 62
As they went on their way, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."

To another Jesus said, "Follow me." But he answered, "Let me go back now, for first I want to bury my father." And Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their dead; as for you, leave them and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Another said to him, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family." And Jesus said to him, "Whoever has put his hand on the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God."

REFLECTION
In the Lord's description of the three would-be disciples in our Gospel reading, the commitment of each is faulty because it has implied limits. These three, then, are examples of conflicting commitments. Each one professes a commitment "to follow Christ," but in a partial way or with a pre-condition.

All of us have a call to follow Christ. Following Jesus is a life-call for all the baptized, to follow our brother, leader and Lord. All of us are called to live our following of Christ in whatever life or occupation we may have, at whatever age we may be, with whatever talents and gifts we may have.

Following Christ begins with knowing him and trusting in him as God's promised Messiah and as our Savior. For it is by faith in him that we have our sins forgiven and we are helped by God's grace to lead a life prepared for eternal life.

The Gospel reading today gives examples of those called by Christ to follow and be with him, as his apostles and disciples, as helpers and ministers in preaching the Gospel. For them, today's ministers and priests of the Church and religious, the following of Christ is their life. For most of us lay people, the following of Christ is living according to the Gospel values and prioritizing these Gospel values in our lives and careers, in our families and daily lives.
The Kingdom of God is for all those who follow Christ's values in their lives, who lead their lives according to God's commandments. The following of Christ is living our lives in preparation for eternal happiness with God in heaven.
