28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 15, 2017 - 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Green

Is 25: 6- l0a / Phil 4: 12-14 / Mt 22:  -14

FROM THE FIRST READING:  Is 25: 6- 10a
On this mountain Yahweh Sabaoth will prepare for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, meat full of marrow, fine wine strained. On this mountain he will destroy the pall cast over all peoples, this very shroud spread over all nations and death will be no more.

GOSPEL READING:  Mt 22: 1 - 14
Jesus spoke this parable, "This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A king celebrated the wedding of his son. He sent his servants to call the invited guests to the wedding feast, but the guests refused to come.

"Again he sent other servants ordering them to say to the invited guests, 'I have prepared a banquet, slaughtered my fattened calves and other animals, and now everything is ready; come then to the wedding feast.' But they paid no attention and went away, some to their fields, and others to their work. While the rest seized the servants of the king, insulted them and killed them.

"The king became angry. He sent troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is prepared, but the invited guests were not worthy. Go then to the crossroads and invite everyone you find to the wedding feast.

"The servants went out at once into the streets and gathered everyone they found, good and bad alike, so that the hall was filled with guests.

"The king came in to see those who were at table, and he noticed a man not wearing the festal garment. So he said to him. 'Friend, how did you get in without the wedding garment?' But the man remained silent. So the king said to his servants,
'Bind his hands and feet and throw him into the dark, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

"Know that many are called, but few are chosen."

REFLECTION
In parables Our Lord tried to teach us about the kingdom of heaven. In today's parable we are told that all are invited to the kingdom of God. Many originally invited refused to come and even insulted and killed some of the king's emissaries.

Wishing to fill his already-prepared banquet with guests, the king tells his emissaries to "go then to the crossroads and invite everyone you find to the wedding feast."

When the king came to his banquet hall, he found one without the required wedding garment. Unable to explain his not having the wedding garment, he is thrown out into the outer darkness.

In the first reading the prophet Isaiah speaks of God preparing a huge banquet "for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, meat full of marrow, fine wine strained."

This invitation to God's kingdom is extended to all: an invitation of God's graciousness and grace, all are invited not because they deserve it but because God is generous and gracious. With the invitation comes some accountability: the guests had to put on the wedding garment provided upon entrance to the wedding hall. God's forgiveness is not without our repentance. To share in God's banquet is to share in the life and mission of his Son Jesus. To share in the joy of God's kingdom is to follow his Son Jesus, to love as Jesus loved and to forgive as Jesus forgave.

God invites us, all together and each one individually. Are we ready to accept? How do we accept his invitation?

SATURDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

October 14, 2017 – SATURDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Callistus I, Pope and Martyr

Green

Jl 4: 12- 21 / Lk 11: 27- 28

Pope St. Callistus I (d. 222) was martyred in Rome under Alexander Severus.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 11: 27- 28

As Jesus was speaking, a woman spoke from the crowd and said to him, "Blessed is the one who bore you and nursed you." Jesus replied, "Surely blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it well."

REFLECTION

We hear many people say how proud the parents of a successful child are for the child who has grown according to the hopes and expectations of his/her parents and of society, of a child who does well.

In today's Gospel reading a woman called out to Jesus praising his mother for bearing and raising up one such as Jesus. In reply, Jesus calls blessed "those who hear the word of God and keep it well."

Parents, teachers in schools and coaches in various areas work to help people do well; and they are duly praised and acknowledged for their work. Parents, teachers and coaches or mentors help stimulate and develop the potentials of individuals; and, of course, the individuals have to do much work themselves for their development and success.

God himself encourages and assists individuals in developing their potentials and skills to become successful members of society. However, as we all know, no amount of coaching and support will work for a person's development if the person does not do his/her part.

There may be times we find it difficult to accept what we are and what we are called to be. We meet loss, pain, failure, suffering and misfortune. How do we act or re-act in such difficult and challenging times?

There may be times we find it very difficult to find and discern God's will for us and to do it. It is always tempting to do what is easier and more convenient but not necessarily the good or better choice for us.

We ask for God's help. We turn to our Mother Mary as the perfect example of doing God's will.

We pray, "0 God, strength of those who hope in you, hear our pleas and, since without you mortal frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace, that, in following your commands, we may please you by our resolve and deeds."

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

BIRTHDAY

     DAVIES SANTOS

     LINDA L. BAUTISTA

     ROWENA GABUCAY

     SAMUEL LUCAS L. CUYEGKENG

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
