Wednesday, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

20 July 2016
Wednesday, 16th Week in Ordinary Time
St. Apollinaris, Bishop and Martyr
Green.

Jer 1: 1, 4 – 10 / Mt 13: 1 – 9

According to tradition, born in Antioch, St. Apollinaris (d 79) was consecrated a bishop by St. Peter and sent to Ravenna during the reign of Emperor Claudius.

From the 1st Reading: Jer 1:4 - 8
A word of Yahweh came to me, "Even before I formed you in the womb I have known you; even before you were born I had set you apart, and appointed you a prophet to the nations."

I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! I do not know how to speak; I am still young."  But Yahweh replied, "Do not say, 'I am still young', for now you will go whatever be the mission I am entrusting to you, and you will speak of whatever I command you to say.  Do not be afraid of them, for I will be with you to protect you – it is Yahweh who speaks."

From the Gospel Reading: Mt 13:1 - 9
That same day Jesus left the house and sat down by the lakeside.  As many people gathered around him, he got in a boat. There he sat while the whole crowd stood on the shore,  and he spoke to them in parables about many things.

Jesus said, "The sower went out to sow and, as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and ate them up.  Other seeds fell on rocky ground where there was little soil, and the seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was not deep. But as soon the sun rose the plants were scorched and withered because they had no roots.  Again other seeds fell among thistles; and the thistles grew and choked the plants.  Still other seeds fell on good soil and produced a crop; some produced a hundredfold, others sixty and others thirty.  If you have ears, then hear!"

Reflection
Today's Gospel reading presents the Parable of the Sower.  Oftentimes the reflections on this parable touch on what represents the 'seeds' and the ground where they fall – the seeds referring to the word of God, and the ground is the kind of person who receives the word.

But this time, let us focus on the sower.  And who is the sower? The sower in the parable is Jesus Christ, the apostles, and all the prophets and followers of Christ who went around from town to town sharing the word of the Kingdom to all those who would listen.  Today, after more than 2000 years, ordinary people like you and me are called to be the new prophets of our time. We are called to spread God's word and will.

When am I going to start?  And how much energy and patience am I willing to give to spread the Good News of our salvation?

Tuesday, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

19 July 2016

Tuesday, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

Green.

Mi 7:14 – 15, 18 – 20 / Mt 12:46 – 50.

From the 1st Reading: Mi 7:18 – 20

Who is a god like you, who takes away guilt and pardons crime for the remnant of his inheritance?  Who is like you whose anger does not last?  For we delight in merciful forgiveness.

Once again you will show us your loving kindness and trample on our wrongs, casting all our sins into the depths of the sea.  Show faithfulness to Jacob, mercy to Abraham, as you have sworn to or ancestors from the days of old.

Gospel Reading: Mt 12:46 - 50

While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, "Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you."

Jesus answered, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then he pointed to his disciples and said, "Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother."

Reflection

In the first reading, the prophet Micah reminds us of  Yahweh's  mercy and faithfulness to his people Israel.  When God forgives our sins, he does so out of his infinite love and mercy.  Mercy is the trademark of the God of the Old Testament.  Micah asks Yahweh to teach the Israelites to also be merciful, to be loving, forgiving and kind-hearted.

There is so much evil, rancour, and vengeance in the world, so it is our duty to sow seeds of goodness, love and forgiveness.  By doing so, we show our faithfulness to our God.  To be faithful to God is to try to imitate his goodness, to tell people about his existence and to defend the oppressed and the lowly.

In the Gospel reading, Jesus  says that the claims of physical relationship come after those of the spiritual.  If we grow up in a family that is God-oriented, then we will not have any problem.  A God-fearing family teaches its children to put God first in their lives.  To listen to the word of God is very essential, that is why the Jews always read the Scriptures in the synagogues and in their homes.  Do our families do the same?  If there is little opportunity to do so in your homes, then we can do this with members of the parish community.  Only those who love God can truly love each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.
